I always have this frequently.

I pray every night. I first thank him for what I have, then I ask for what I want, then I pray for others, then I finish with a our father and hail mary.

But this prayer takes around 10-15minutes because as I’m praying I always think “Why is God real?”
“How do I know God is real?”

Have you ever had any of these questions? I always go back to the Lord though because whenever I’m alone he’s always there for me.

Also I Padre Pio is a miracle to me. He’s been dead for I think over 30+ years and hasn’t rotted at all. That just shows God in him.

How do I get these thoughts out of my mind, and how do I 100% believe in Christ.

P.S. I’m in 8th grade about to make my conformation, please pray for me as I struggle with this and I’m asking Christ every day to help me believe in him.
Thank you and bless you all! (:

at your age this is quite common - it is only natural to doubt and its out of curiosity you wonder what if?

I believe everyone has this moment

this is where you test your faith, and people can deal with it in different ways

I personally look at all that is around me and how wonderful my life is, and the splendor of the Universe and all its perfections and complexities and I just know that their has to be a creator and I believe he is the Lord - the same Lord of Abraham

Steven,

You were named after the first martyr of the Church, who had great courage, personal strength and faith. It is wonderful that you are committed to regular prayer, as there is something inside of you that is telling you it is important. What could that be? Try praying through the intercession your name-patron, St. Stephen the First Martyr, and look to him for example. I’m sure this will help, as you will feel as if you have a partner to help you approach God in a meaningful way.

You are young, and it is natural for you to be curious about the world around you, both natural and supernatural. My son, also by the same name and likely your age, is going through a similar phase. We are fortunate that he has chosen to serve at the Holy Altar, and we have a terrific priest who is very good with young adults. Our priest normally manages to reach him during their short time together on Sundays. Did you ever consider serving at the Mass? Do you have a priest in your parish with whom you can relate? Seeing God in others is often the best way to see God in yourself, so look to the people around you in this way.

We pray for you as you approach your Confirmation, knowing that you will be filled with the gift of the Holy Spirit on this blessed occasion and milestone on your journey of faith!

Hang in there, and continue to pray! 👍

I think that it’s amazing of you to be interested in your faith, as so many young Catholics are losing it these days. Maybe the best way to get your faith back when you slip is to pray to God for help in your unbelief. The 8th grade was actually when I converted, just 2 years ago, or thereabouts (I’m in 10th now), so I know what it’s like. I’d say pray a lot, and make quite a point of it to yourself, and read up about the faith. It really is such a beautiful and interesting faith that we have, and it contains the truth and the Word of God. God bless you on your faith journey!

First of all - Praise the Lord for your good, courageous heart and conscience. Being a Christian is filled with tests of your love for the Lord and I see a very loving Christian in you. The tests will come. The hard part is recognizing the tests and acknowledging that this calls for you to use your strength and ask Jesus for help. You are strong. You know in your heart that you choose Jesus. I think you pass the test. These questions or overlay of thoughts while you pray will pass as long as you stay strong and know that with the Lord, you can overcome this test on your ability to focus in prayer. Many saints have struggled with this. Congrats on your upcoming Confirmation. Have a look at The Divine Mercy devotion in St. Faustina’s Diary. You’ll see that with the Mercy of God and Trust in Jesus, you will be able to do many fine works with your hands and the Mercy of God. Jesus, I trust in You, increase my trust in You.

It is good that you are asking this important question. I have asked that same question. This is how I reason.

The fundamental doubt for me, and perhaps for many people, has been the existence of God.

For myself, I formed that question like this.

We exist - we are created - there is a creator.

Does that creator have intellect and will or is our creator simply mindless chance?

In another words: Are we dealing the laws of physics without will and without intellect? To pretend that this question does not lie at the heart of doubt would be a mistake.

It is not possible the argue this question. We can not prove nor disprove that a great intellect desired, planned and set forth the universe. We can not prove that a great intellect desired to create the explosion of the Big Bang and the formation of stars and galaxies.

So where did that lead us?

I have reasoned that it takes intellect and desire to learn and understand the universe. Therefore, it must have taken intellect and desire to create the universe. We call this intellect and desire “God”.

Believing that there is intelligence and desire in the creation of the universe, gives me hope that there is purpose and direction for my life and the lives of my children and grandchildren.

What does he need to do, or what do you need to see or feel to believe in him?

What’s the test you plan to use to prove God? If God could come down right now and prove himself to you, what do you want him to do? He’s not gonna make someone love you. He’s not going to kill someone. He’s not going to do anything like that. So what do you want for proof? And then go from there.

This is a question and plea for advice from an 8th grader, who prays and is preparing for confirmation. We are not addressing an angry atheistic person. Perhaps we could be a bit more enlightened in our approach …

I’m so happy that you are going to be confirmed. You are already so brave to ask such questions. The fact that you question your faith and before making the beautiful Sacrament of Confirmation shows that you already have faith. Just the fact that you are thinking of Him who loves YOU so much.

Our faith in Jesus is really a process. For example, if you look at the story of the woman at the well who meets Jesus in John 4:1-42. The Samaritan woman experienced the stages of faith in Jesus. First, she meets Jesus. Second, she learns about Him. Third, she came to believe in Him. Fourth, she went and told people about Jesus so that other people listened to her and they too came to believe in Him.

This is a remarkable story about how God knows everything about us and how He loves us anyway. The story takes place with Jesus and His Apostles travelling on their way to Galilee from Judea.

The ordinary route from Judea to Galilee was to travel through Samaria. But, the Jews and Samaritans did not get along and they were in a big fight mostly over the place God’s people were to worship Him. So, Jews avoided Samaria and would never travel through that town but they would avoid going through by going around Samaria along the Jordan river even if it took twice as long.

So, what does Jesus do? He goes straight through Samaria and encounters the woman at the well.

Jesus meets the woman at the well at a time when women were generally not at the well for it was during the heat of the day and it was very hot out. The women usually gathered their water together in the morning or early evening when it was cooler out. The woman was also alone which is unusual as the women would go together to the well to gather their water and share in friendship. But, this woman is alone, showing that she is an outcast.

Also, Jesus speaks to her. Jesus asks her for a drink. She is surprised that a man, a Jew would speak to her and to drink out of the same cup as they are suppose to be enemies. The cup implies togetherness and friendship. A ritual that we celebrate today at Mass when we receive Holy Communion.

Jesus does 3 things that a Jew would normally not do:
  1. He speaks with a woman in public, which at that time, men only spoke with a woman in public if they were related to them.
  2. He shares a drink with her, a Samaritan.
  3. He associates with a recognized sinner.
Jesus proceeds to talk to the woman about the living waters and tells her that whoever drinks this water would never thirst, that the water that He gives becomes like a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

Through our baptism we have been given this living water. St. Paul describes Baptism in terms of drinking from the Spirit in 1 Cor. 12:13. Jesus speaks of this living water as the life and vitality of the Spirit.

The woman is so excited and so happy after speaking to Jesus that she left her water jug behind. She becomes the first Evangelist because she goes and tells everyone in her town about Jesus, The Messiah, the one who knew everything about her and loved her anyway.

Its interesting that she addresses Him first as “Sir”, secondly as “Prophet” and then third, she comes to know Him as “the Christ”, “the Messiah” - “The Savior of the World.”

The water jug that she leaves behind symbolizes the fallen desire of man that draws pleasure from the dark wells of the world but is never satisfied for long like things like material wealth, things, addictions, selfishness, etc.

Conversion to Christ moves us like the Samaritan woman to renounce the world, leave behind the desires of our earthen vessels and follow a new way of life.

Jesus shows us how He meets with the poor, the sinners and the broken. He meets us whereever we are broken with a desire to heal us and fill us with His love like nothing else can fill. It did not matter to Jesus that the Samaritan woman was a sinner. Jesus wants us all to know that we are all welcome to know and love Jesus. And the more we know about Jesus, the more we want to share about Jesus with other people. So, where do you meet Jesus?

I leave you with a link about the Holy Spirit:

And, a prayer by St. Pio (who led me into the confessional after being away for many years):

Let the Holy Spirit act within you. Give yourself up to all his transports and have no fear. He is so wise and gentle and discreet that he never brings about anything but good. How good this Holy Spirit, this Comforter, is to all, but how supremely good he is to those who seek him.
— St. Pio of Pietrelcina
Padre Pio’s Prophetic Spirit

And lastly, I leave you Peace.

Yes I’ve asked those questions. But the real question is, what is driving you to ask those questions? If God wasn’t real, why would you be searching for him? Why would any human have the drive to search for some supernatural Being? That satisfied me, along with a few other things that you can look at at Newadvent.org. But ultimately, the way to 100% to believe in Christ is to ask him for his grace and for faith hope and charity. I guess I recommend praying to St. Peter or St. Thomas since they both had moments where they lost faith and trust in God (Peter when Christ was getting handed over, Thomas after the Resurrection).
