I am loooking for a list of passages that cannot be possible if one considers them only in the literal.

The snakes head has not be crushed by Christ.

The lamb has not laid down with the lion.

I hope I am making some sense, thanks!!!

Actually, what you are referring to is the literalistic interpretation, not the literal one.

As another poster on another thread pointed out, it’s the same as interpreting a sentence such as, “It was raining cats and dogs” to mean, literalistically, that cats and dogs were really falling from the sky. We all know, of course, that it is just an idiom that means “It was raining very hard.”

II think I am thinking more of prophecies than literal misunderstanding.

Any lists!

Jim,

Once again, you have succeeded in leaving me confused as to exactly what it is you’re looking for here. Sorry.

In Genesis we are told that the Messiah would crush the head of the snake.

Jesus did not physcally crush the head of the snake.

Origen claims that the some of the Jews understood that prophecy in a physical sense only (literal).

Therefore Jesus was not the Christ.

The lion shall lay down with the lamb.

The lions do not lay down with lambs.

Therefore the Christ has not come.

Are there other such prophecies?

well, the idea of taking the Millennium purely literalistically is not possible, ie., chiliasm is untenable. That is, a Catholic cannot beleive that Jesus would return physically (other than the Euchartis of course) to earth prior to the end of time and General Judgement.

That’s a big example, but I’m sure you already knew that.

🙂

No!

But, yes!

Many of the prophecies if understood only in a physical literal sense, then they have not as of yet happened and Jesus is not the Christ.

I am trying to show a dear friend of mine that literal physical understanding is incorrect. (I do not know what else to call the idea but physical literal or literal physical.)

In the first chapter of Genesis there are three days without a physcial sun for planet earth. He invents many ideas that are not biblical, all at the same time yelling: “Only the Bible!”

The crushing of the snake never happened, accept in the movie about Christ by Mel Gibbson.

He is a great lover of the Holy Bible, but hates Roman Catholics.

The lion has not laid down with the Lamb. Therefore the Christ has not come, if one takes the literal physical only.

Well, I can tell that I am unable to communicate my ideas. I might get lucky if I try again later.

I want to thank you for your time and concern
