Yes, Friday still remains a day of penance. Since many Catholics started adopting the practice of eating Lobsters Thermidor and Shrimp Scampi for Friday “penance” the Church got the idea that the spirit of the law was not being followed and allows a different penance to be substituted. But the fact so many Catholics are ignorant of this mandatory requirement is the fault of the guys in the pulpit not saying it. (I heard it myself from the pulpit with a comparison of beans and franks versus Lobsters Thermidor as an example of what is real penance and what isn’t.)

As for priests and their office, many of them refer to their breviary as “the wife.” 😃

A very devout Anglican friend of mine said that she doesn’t believe missing church on sundays is a sin, but she does believe it affects her faith. Their pastor suggested that if they notice a friend not at church anymore, to give them a call and see if they are ok etc… She said something to the effect of the “church” being religion, and that not attending a “religious service” is not severing your relationship with Jesus.

I was starting to dwell on what she said but this thread makes it clearer on the actual true point of view.

I agree with their pastor about calling someone who hasn’t come to church. One of the things that I think is often missing in Catholic churches is that kind of concern about fellow parishioners. Our churches are often quite large and we don’t know the people around us so that no one notices or says anything if someone is missing.
