Hi,

I wonder if anyone can offer me advice on a problem I suffer from, which I feel is a spiritual problem (i hope I am posting in the right place). I have real problems with anger. I’m so tightly wound and I just can’t seem to control my temper over lots of different things. I feel really bad as I know this makes me difficult to live with at times. I try so hard to change but my anger just keeps getting the better of me.

Does anybody else here struggle with anger and if so, what has helped you? For instance, is there a particular saint that i could pray to, or a spiritual exercise against anger?

I would really appreciate advice as I hate being in the grip of anger, it’s such an ugly emotion 😦

Thanks,

Sarah

Confession has helped me deal with a lot of my anger issues.

That and prayer.

I was struggling it a lot before. The one who’s been helping me is the one I got angry and mad at. She shows me with love, patient, and lots of praying.

I’ve realized that going to confession more often helps me very much. The more I confess my sins, the more I realize how sinful I am and how forgiving God is. God gives us His great love; thus, we ought to love one another. When we have that love toward others, it will conquer all - including your anger.

I also prayed the Novena of St. Rita who is known for being a peace-maker. She is the one you can ask!

Thank you for those suggestions. I will try very hard to deepen my prayer life about this.

I get quite nervous going to confession so I tend to only really go every couple of months. I think I would benefit from receiving this sacrament more often though, it just seems like nobody else in my parish goes very much (not that I would necessarily know…but there isn’t exactly a queue!) So I end up having the same attitude as I don’t like to stand out too much 😦 Silly i know…

I’ll pray for you and I am sorry I can’t give any good advice. I have the world’s most mellow temper and can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I’ve really lost it.

Leave it at the foot of the cross…And thank God for everything.

Thank you so much for your prayers, I’m sure they will help me. 👍 How I wish I was mellow and not so grumpy and moody! LOL 🤷

Whenever you feel anger at someone, stop and say a brief prayer [Glory Be . . .] for them and their well being… [It’s more beneficial than counting to ten.]

Thanks, I will try doing that. I usually find though that I need a complete ‘time out’ from the person I’m having an angry encounter with, counting to ten will not do it. It takes a while for the anger to physically ‘leave my system’ if that makes sense (I mean the feeling of adrenaline and tension and the temptation to verbally lash out). So sometimes I will go out for a ‘power-walk’ for half an hour and just give myself a chance to chill out and think calmly and rationally. The only problem is, it’s not always possible to do that (go away for that period of time) and that’s when things can escalate into some argument 😦 .

I should probably clarify that I’m not at all a violent person, i tend to just say things I don’t mean and snap at people. And I’m describing myself at my absolute worst here! But I want to take action to get rid of this anger as it is detrimental to my relationships and makes me feel like a lousy person at times :(.

I guess this is just part of my particular struggle with sin in general and I will have to just keep trying…I’d be interested to hear from anyone who has had similar problems and can encourage me. Thanks for the responses so far, and sorry if I’m rambling, it’s getting late here where I live!

The virtue that moderates anger is meekness. Maybe you can pray specifically for that 😉 .

It’s OK to get angry at some things. It’s how we handle it that gets the better of us. —KCT

catholic family services is in the phone book and can offer some great councelling at a very reasonable price and even prescribe meds if needed. there is no shame in asking for help!
God Bless You!

Hi Richardsgirl,

I had/have the same problem. I would get so angy I would literally shake, like trembling. I finally started saying a Hail Mary when I got like that… as long as I kept shaking I would say Hail Mary’s, and when I’d calm down I would remind myself to breathe deeply, think about the big picture. At the very least, saying the prayer helped calm me down, and there were times that I think Mary actually got some divine intervention for me!

Peace.

I tend to get fiery-eyed angry at people who have hurt me and haven’t apologized.

I have learned through experience in recent months that God takes away a lot of that anger if you sincerely offer a few Rosaries SPECIFICALLY FOR the well being of the person you are
really, really mad at. It really works.
If your angry is directed at a particular person,
try offering a Holy Rosary specifically for God to bless THAT person.

God bless you

Pray for the gifts of patience, humility, compassion and love of self & neighbors. But if you prayer for these things and your prayers are sincere, you may end up being tested.

Joy & anger don’t go together well, AFAICS - & St.Philip Neri was “notorious” (as it were) for his joyfulness. 🙂

  • Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
  • a spirit of thanksgiving
  • prayer for others
  • the virtues of meekness & mercy & purity
  • all these can help. Anger is an ego-assertive emotion, so if we can turn from self, to God & our neighbour, that ought to help. Change takes time - & that means being patient (including patience with ourselves)
