The thread on “If you were to form your own Order…” got me thinking so…

I am curious bout how one would go about setting up a religious (monastic) order?
Are there set rules and protocals in the Church or does one simply find like minded people and go from there.

Any info would be appreciated.

Peace
James

I’m in the process of founding one right now. You may PM me if you wish.

Thank you I shall.
At present, my ideas are somewhat loose and dim.
I would like something that will appeal to older men and women who are seeking a life of study, contemplation, praise and service in a monastic setting. Beyond that I am still forming ideas and discerning direction.

At present I am caring for my wife, who has alzheimers, so it is difficult to proceed as quickly as I would like. At present, barring divine intervention, I suspect my lady will join our Lord in about 2 years. I hope to have something clearly laid out by then.

My main concern is whether there are rules that diocese require, how one might gain the services of a Priest, etc.
I suppose there really isn’t anything to prevent like minded people from setting up an organization/monastary but I wouldn’t want to accidentally do something wrong that would have to be changed or eliminated later.

Peace
James

Both.

If you have been keeping a journal of inspirations for a charism, you’ll take the constitutions from that. The Holy Ghost works on attraction. Each item of your proposed charism has to be discerned.

You have a right to setup a website to advertise the proposed charism, as long as you say “Proposed” on the site, to avoid confusion.

Charisms and habits evolve. I had been planning for 30 years to start a cenobitic (monastic) community, then the Holy Ghost made a sudden right turn, and now we are starting hermits-in-diaspora.

You’ll also need to contact a canon lawyer to assist you in the process. It’s a mind-bender, so be prepared for trials like that.

Making petition to the bishop for recognition is waaay down the road. You need four aspirants living the rule for a matter of time; have a stable source of habit parts; remunerative work; and a novitiate house. All your ducks have to be in a row before taking the “package” to the bishop.

HTH.

Cloisters
