Procession of Silence (Good Friday)

Is anyone familiar with the Procession of Silence, which is apparently a Mexican custom on Good Friday? It is on the schedule for our church (there are a lot of Hispanics in my parish), but when I Google it, all I find are extremely elaborate events with costumes in other countries. I am just wondering if any of you have experienced this in an ordinary American parish, and can describe what it is like on that more reduced scale. I am wondering (for example) if people just watch the Procession, or is everyone expected to process?
