Processional cross during Lent.

Has anyone ever heard that we are not supposed to use a processional cross during Lent? Our new Pastor informed us that we were doing things wrong because we had holy water in the stoups and used a processional cross. I know he’s wrong about the holy water because Rome has said that the faithful are not to be denied this important sacramental during Lent. But is he right about the cross?

I know we can veil the cross and images starting on the 5th Sunday of Lent but all of Lent???

He also doesn’t want a crucifix for the Veneration of the Cross but an 8’x6’ wooden cross. We used to have a huge wooden cross for veneration but in the last couple of years had reverted to the beautiful crucifix that used to hang in our church - until they installed a Resurrectifix about 20 years ago.

Yea, I think it’s supposed to be a relic of the True Cross or crucifix.

Which rubric is that? I won’t rule it out, but the Missal says “cross” over and over again.

did you ask him? Is he a foreign priest? I’ve always have seen a cross process, my son’s carried one today in the procession…

No, he’s not foreign. He’s from this province and as far as I know, he’s been 35+ years a priest for this diocese. He’s not the easiest man to approach, particularly when he just declares to the nearly-70, devout sacristan that “You’re doing everything all wrong,” without explaining and leaving her upset and near tears.

He won’t baptize during Lent unless it’s an emergency; he wanted no white cloth over the purple cloth on the altar until a parishioner whose home he was visiting argued with him that a white cloth was mandated by the GIRM; he and the parishioners played musical stoups for the first few weeks (he’d empty them and they’d fill them up again because they thought the stoups were empty because someone had forgotten to fill them); and then he informed us that a processional cross was inappropriate during Lent.

I just wanted to know if someone had heard of the processional cross thing before, because he’s refusing to have it for the palm procession next Sunday.

he sounds like a difficult priest and not very approachable. I guess your have to do things his way. He probably got mad at the musical stoubs. Unless you can prove him wrong from GIRM like someone did about the altar covering, you are probably going to have to grin and bear it and pray for an early retirement. I would avoid getting sucked up in any revolt against him since it seems like a number of people are already upset at their treatment by him.
