Proestants don't believe in the Trinity? Really?

Is it true that many Protestants and evangelicals believe in a biblical Trinity (concept of the Trinity revealed in Scripture only), while Catholics believe in the concept of Trinity that was revealed in Scripture and formalised by the Church.

Protestants would more than likely not agree witht he Church councils (except maybe the Jerusalem council) I would think?

Is there a difference? I think I read something about this on a Christian (non-Catholic) website. I can track it down if you want.

If this is true that there are differences between “the scriptural Trinity” and the Catholic view:

1 How in the world could Protestants have an understanding of Trinity like the Church does based on the Bible alone?

If there is NO difference:
How come Protestants still maintain the Church is a “false” Church? How could they adopt such a complicated doctrine of the CHurch, but still deny obedience to the Chucrch?

There are a few in the mainstream who do not, and many that I would consider fringe. Like the sacred name cult. Then you have weirdos like John Hagee who believe in a “dual covenant theology”. Trinity for us, no trinity or belief in Jesus needed for Jews.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Protestants and evangelicals say they believe in the Trinity but not in the same way that we Orthodox believers do. I just don’t understand how they can believe in a different Trinity.

I don’t think you can really call any one that is Non-Trinitarian a Christian due to the fact that Islam is also Non-Trinitarian and believe something about Christ also.

Some Protestant don’t see eye to eye with Catholics and Orthodox pertaining to the Trinity. For example
**
Catholic Question: Is Mary the Mother of God?**

Protestant: No

Catholic: Is Christ not God?

Protestant: Yes

Catholic: Was not Mary the mother of Christ?

Protestant: Yes

Catholic: Then Mary been the mother of Christ must be the mother of God.

Protestant: No

Catholic:

Can anyone explain how a Trinitarian can give an answer like that above.
Assyrians call Mary the Mother of Christ, and yet the Pope and the Assyrian Patriarch have signed a Christological joint-declaration.

I think you’re mistaken.

Some Protestants may claim difficulty with the reduction of the doctrine to what they may consider Greek philosophical terminology but there remains no essential difference in their apprehension of the the Doctrine. They believe, teach and confess One God in Three Persons, undivided and yet distinct and relational.

Then again, I think by far the great majority of Protestants are just fine with the Nicene and Chalcedonian formulations.

Lutherans still have the Athanasian creed as one their three chief symbols. I believe the Anglicans and Presbyterians as well.

I find it a bit funny that one of the hammers we are so often willing to use on Protestants is their lack of uniformity and yet when we ask questions like this we presuppose a uniformity that we already know doesn’t exist.

Hi all

I am not a catholic or a protestant and I believe in the trinity which is believed by our church because it is right in God’s word the Bible

1John 5:7 King James
So there are three witnesses in heaven: the Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit, and these three are One
You cannot find the Trinity mentioned specifically in the Bible. 1John5:7 is properly translated:

7For there are three that testify: 8thea] Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.

What you have quoted is the infamous Comma Johanneum that found its way into Scripture in the 4th century perhaps to comabt arianism. . If this tranaslation had been the accepted translation all along Arianism would never have sprung up. This translation was not in any translations of Scripture prior to the 4th century and is not found in any contemporary translations. Even most Protestantsdenominations acknowledge the king james tranalation you posted is not correct.

You can read more about it here:

Its a mistranslation 1John 5-7

Heres the way all scripture prior to the 4th Century presented it:

7For there are three that testify: 8thea] Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.

Heres the Johanneum translation

So there are three witnesses in heaven: the Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit, and these three are One

Note that the original gives no support to the doctrine of the trinity at all while the Johanneum seem to explicity affirm the Trinity.

There is consensus today that original translation is correct.

So like what bible is this one from?
I myself use the Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible.

One God in 3 Persons…Father, Son, Holy Spirit
This is the Trinity, and if one does not accept that, then I can not see how one can be a Christian, either Protestant or Catholic

This is a reason that many do not consider Mormons to be Christians however they describe themselves as Christians one argue with them. I believe there baptisms are not considered valid because there are not Trinitarian

I was debating with my brother last night abou the Bible, and the Trinity was brought up. He said something like that the Trinity was made up by the Church. I said that if you don’t belive in the Trinity you can’t be a Christian. He said I was wrong because Proestants (I think he implied most or all, but I can’t swear to it) don’t belive in it. This came off to me as hogwash. Can any Protestants on this board attest to this? I’m 99% sure that Protestantism is Trinitarian, but there may be some fringe groups.
The Church of God International doen’t believe on TRINITY. Because is not biblical.

I know. I believe that they teach that Satan is Jesus’s brother . No that’s a hard one to get your mind around,

My point was that if they want to call themselves Christians that’s fine. I mean Protestants allow us Catholic to call ourselves that, don’t they:D
Yes very true. Satan was Jesus’ spirit brother. My goodness where do they come up with this stuff, lol. Anybody can call themselves something they are not. A dog can’t say he’s a cat and actually be a cat, lol. He’s still a dog. Yes some Protestants think we are not at all, lol. But others don’t have a problem. Some say we are the “whore of Babylon.” silly people, lol.

Which it is. The word trinity is not gonna be in there, lol. Neither is bible. But it is in there. Just look around. 😃

COGI, I am not familiar with that denomination. The vast majority of Christians have always accepted the Trinity as a major defining part of the faith.

Hi

I think that JWs and the Christadolphians don’t believe in the trinity and they are definitley not Catholics, may be they are an off shoot of Protestantism if they mutually agree on it.

I know that JWs say that they are the only true Christians. I think that is a thing which only GodAllahYHWH would decide on the Day of Judgement.

Am I correct?

Thanks
