I’ll be the first to admit that I can have some pretty bad language, and most days, my swearing is off the charts. But one thing I never do is take the Lord Jesus’s name in vain. Never, ever.

I’m around a lot of people that do this instead of swearing, and I’ll be honest that I sort of wince when they say it.

Anyone else like this?

Yes, I’m the same way. Even when I’d fallen away from the church (and was a potty mouth to boot!), hearing the Lord’s name taken in vain made me wince. Sadly, I hear it from my nephew a lot. My mom and I correct him, but it’s a habit he got from his mom.

I will occasionally use profanity without the Lord’s or other holy figure’s name in it. I do not like to take His name in vain either and will make an effort to substitute a different word not having to do with Him.

I do think sometimes when people say “Oh God” or “Dear God” it’s almost like a prayer because they are exasperated and kind of calling for help in a way. It depends on the situation. I know in the past I have said “Oh God…and I mean that as a prayer” in response to some very frustrating thing.

I had a friend in high school who instead of using the Lord’s name would exclaim “Judas!” I always remembered that as kind of a novel way of not using the Lord’s name.

By the way, when my aunt was around people who would say the Lord’s name a lot in vain in their conversation, she would deal with it by interjecting, “Yes, He died for me too.” Maybe you could try that.
