My OB/GYN Dr. Has prescribed progesterone for medical reasons to be taken in later half of cycle. Is this acceptable under Catholic CHurch teaching? Is this ever an abortafacient or contraceptive? THanks

Nothing intrinsically wrong with taking progesterone. It’s an ingredient in the HRT that I take for a medical condition, but not in very large amounts.

If your medication has a high amount of progesterone in it, though, it can possibly have a contraceptive effect. Your doctor probably would’ve told you about it if this was the case with your medication, though.

If you’re unsure, just ask your pharmacist.

I do not think it is wrong.

Though, it would depend why you are taking it.

For the last 2 years, I take progesterone (troches) in the second half of my cycle as my hormone levels are wacky.
Also for the 1st 3or4 months of my pregnancy (with DS) I used progesterone (suppositories) so as to not miscarry as I was spotting.
Also, at one point I would go 3or 4 months without a period and had to take Progesterone (Prometrium) to bring on a period

It depends on the dose, frequecy and length of treatment if it can cause an abortion or act in a contraceptive way.

Potentially, it can be contraceptive-like, preventing ovulation, again, depending on how it is used. As well, it can lead to an early embryonic abortion, particularly with sudden withdrawl.

Progesterone is the “pregnancy hormone” secreted by the ovaries to maintain pregnancy, but is dose and frequency related in its effects.

If its natural progesterone called Prometrium, its fine. Its not used as a contraceptive.
