I have been thinking that when my daughters are old enough for school, that my wife and I may home school them. What are good Catholic programs for home schooling?

I really liked the material from Catholic Heritage Curricula. It’s not uber structured and it gives you a good variety of materials. One of the things I found helpful when starting out was to spend more time discerning your child’s learning styles and temperament. Then you can make better choices on material. I have one very visual learner and one very kinesthetic learner. I got completely different things for them as we moved forward.

We use Seton. We love it. This is the first year we have used it. In the past we picked from state curriculum. Seton is a breath of fresh air for us. I like that it is very structured and that the lesson plans are easy to follow. The downside is the same. Because it is structured and detailed, you must stay on track.

Could you make any good suggestions for materials used to discern your children’s temperaments and learning styles?
I was just thinking of starting a thread on this subject. I hope the OP wouldn’t mind if the net was enlarged to encompass resources on teaching/child development or other subjects that may interest home educators. I would also love to hear how posters developed their own curriculum and resources they use.
If this is hijacking, let me know and I’ll start my own thread!

A while back, another member posted this gem about homeschooling and I think it really should be a “sticky” on the forum for homeschooling info; it contains a wealth of information regarding the different programs and curricula

The “best” curriculum or method for homeschooling is the one that works for your children, you, and your family. Take a good, long look at your own educational philosophy and your children’s learning styles and ability before making a final choice. If you get a program that doesn’t work for you or the kids, don’t be afraid to scrap it. There are yahoo groups devoted for the sale and purchase of used Catholic homeschool curricula.
Do you have an upcoming conference in your area? If so, I highly encourage you to attend. Not only will you get a “hands-on” look at various curriculum and material, most conferences have at least one talk geared towards new homeschoolers.
