"Progressive" Catholics feeling a bit fatigued...Yes!

Here in an opinion piece from a “Progressive” Catholic in the archdiocese of Milwaukee.

Tell me what you think.

Shortly before his triumphant return to Germany for World Youth Day, Pope Benedict XVI bemoaned the “spiritual fatigue” plaguing some progressive Catholics.

He’s right, of course. Many of us are tired. But it has less to do with our spirituality and everything to do with the church hierarchy.

Wow, she was actually serious, too, wasn’t she? When I got to “We’re tired and perplexed that the church continues to prohibit birth control in a world where so many women use abortion as a form of family planning” I wasn’t so sure that it wasn’t a spoof. Hmm…a whole lot of people commit a grave sin, so let’s just decide it’s not a sin anymore. That way all those women who have abortions don’t have to feel bad. And we all know that the rate of abortions would go down if only birth control were more widely available. :tsktsk:

And this: “We’re tired of a church that protected sexual abusers, yet is currently inspecting seminaries for homosexuals, once again perpetuating the myth that homosexuality is akin to pedophilia”. Again, interesting. I guess she thinks it was all straight men who abused those teenage boys (which of course we all know is called ephebophilia), or that there was an equal number of girls abused. Also, if she’s tired of the church having protected abusers, which it is no longer doing to the best of my knowledge, then why would she not want the church to DO SOMETHING about it?!

And then the finisher: "These are good people, living decent lives and making moral judgments based on their hearts as much as their faith. They remain loyal to the Catholic Church because they’re not advocates of the “love it or leave it” mentality."

Since when is trashing the Church, not understanding the Church, and disobeying the church being “loyal?”

Remember that this woman is in the diocese lately run by the infamous Archbishop Weakland. She’s probably had the unfortunate experience of poor catechesis. She’s also part of a group that is going to be more and more sidelined. They are a dying breed and will howl a lot before they’re gone. But we must remember that the devil is going to be looking for more ways to attack the Church. He’s not going to give up. He’s supposed to be smart, but after all this time he still thinks that he’s going to be able to topple the Church. Unfortunately, along the way he’s going to be deceiving many and leading them astray. We must be as kind as we can in pointing out the truth to them. I did send this lady an email. I don’t know if it will do any good, but I guess it can’t hurt.

Anyone out there from this diocese? I read some terrible things Bishop Weakland did. Are they true? I hope the present Bishop is undoing some of the awful things.

They should be tired - they don’t have the Holy Spirit giving them the strength that Jesus provides those who do His work! We should pray that they don’t find rest until they return home.

I live in the archdiocese of Milwaukee. I have heard things about Weakland, but mostly I have visited churches in the area and have seen his influence still very much alive. He was here 25 years! Imagine what damage was done in that amount of time. Please pray for Archbishop Dolan.

Here is what I don’t understand.

Why stay? Why do those who oppose the Church so strongly stay? Do they feel they have some “right” to the Church? Do they understand so little of what the Church teaches or how doctrine is developed? Their real problem is the fact that the Church is Catholic.

I could never be involved in a Church I disagreed with on so many issues. Besides, I am sure the Episcopal Church, or the United Church of Christ would be happy to add them to their shrinking numbers.

I really feel sorrow for someone like this woman. I used to just care about what MY feelings and how I could still be a Catholic.
Well, I WOKE UP and with the help of my priest brother, I am fully accepting ALL that the Church teaches. Isn’t that why we go up for Communion? To BE in Communion with Our Lord AND with HIS Church?

For most of us who are NOT in Milwaukee, let’s continue to pray for her and all others who just ‘don’t get it’ and hope that their hearts are soften to The Truth.

Probably one of the more intelligent things I’ve heard today.

The Church will be in trouble now as the generations progress, Reason is becoming more popular then Faith, I do not know one person in my Sophmore class who is going to actively continue their Religion after they have the decision to stop (their parents are forcing them to go to CCD, and they despise it) except for one girl, who is a Protestant I believe anyway.

I guess we will all see though, you can never say never.

Sopho (wise); More (fool). Is reason becoming more popular than faith, or is it rationalization?
 
Phshew! I was getting worried as I read through that. I was gald to see that the author at the bottom was nobody I knew. I was afraid I’d get to the bottom and find my MOM’s name! 😦

Getting an M. Div at Milwaukee’s seminary while Weakland was in charge was the worst thing, spiritually, that ever happend to poor old mom. It’s gonna be a while for that town…
