What year would you say that “cancel culture” started here in the west? I remember reading a article in the Economist that was fairly critical of similar public humiliation tactics used in China about 5-7 yrs ago.

On Kaepernick, I’m not thinking of him specifically so much as the NFL banning any further kneeling or similar protests. You could argue - as Cancel Culture correctly does - that the NFL may do as it pleases as a private corporation, just like all of the social media networks that practice rampant censorship. But can and should are two separate matters. Censorship, censuring, and other such forms of punishment are sleazy business.
As to cancel culture at large, I think it might help to think of this less as an issue of Left-vs-Right and more as one of Establishment-vs-Anti-Establishment. The Left is currently quite divided. I’ve seen a fine example of Cancel Culture toward Bernie Sanders!

I totally agree with what you are saying about cancel culture.
I just don’t think Colin was “canceled.” I think he wasn’t given another contract because his on field performance was not worth the money he was asking for & because he was/is a cancer in the clubhouse/lockerroom.
He’s just not a good teammate & employee, from what I’ve read.
If he was a better teammate, player, & employee; he would still be playing, regardless of his protests.
“Cancel” is when a good employee gets fired or boycotted because of difference of opinion that has NOTHING to do with work.
Like what is happening now with J.K. Rowling; or like that former military officer who was fired from Boeing because 30 years ago he wrote a brief in the military (or article) on why female members of the military should not fight on the front lines. Honestly, he was just fired because of something he wrote 30 years ago, that wasn’t derogatory or anything. It was simply the majority view. Same with what’s happening to Goya … total bunk. Why punish all the workers at the company simply because they don’t like that the CEO (who is a devout Catholic) cooperated with the Trump on a business initiative?

The reason for that is because the NFL realized that it was hurting their revenue. Half (if not more) of their most loyal fans are did not appreciate that protest.
If it wasn’t hurting their revenue, they wouldn’t have cared. The NFL Commissioner is a moderate RINO, not a right winger.
