In the past, I made a promise to God related to getting and playing the accordion (in the promise, I have to tell all that God helped me get, and play the accordion, when playing in public/in front of others.) I plan on getting the promise dispensed for many reasons.

However, I was thinking of joining an Accordion association in Connecticut. There will be an open mic event later this month, and there are also meetings. However, I am afraid that I won’t be able to get a dispensation before then. What should I do?

I’m not sure of the nature of your ‘promise’ but I am sure that you can’t expect to bargain with God.

In any case, I don’t think that an accordion is serious matter relating to a vow.

As you appear to be going through RCIA at the moment, I would suggest bringing it up with your priest in conversation to see what he thinks.

As far as the open mic session goes, I can’t see what on earth should be stopping you? You have presumably got innate musical talent. That came from God. Why would you feel that you shouldn’t mention it, even if only in passing? You don’t have to go all bible-thumping crazy about it 🙂

Yup.
Private vows should be much more serious matters not something as harmless as playing the accordion. Also , they are not to be entered into lightly.

Go. Have fun. the Lord would be proud of you.

I met with the Sister in charge of RCIA yesterday to pick up the materials. I mentioned the promise, and if I needed a dispensation. She said I probably don’t need a dispensation, and that playing music is a gift from God, and that I could go to the open mic event. 🙂
