Promises to God about prayers?

About six months ago, I made a promise to God that I would say 80 Hail Marys and Our Fathers. I also made other promises too that I forget about. I did not really know how serious making a promise to God was (recently I started looking up what sins are serious or not and putting more effort into that kind of thing).
Anyway, I forgot about these promises and, as a result, did not end up doing them. (I just remembered them today) How bad of a sin is this?

Also, how quickly do I have to fullfil this promise now that I have remembered it (can I do it over several days or do I have to do it all in one day). I originally intended (when I made the promise) to say them over multiple days.

Can I still receive communion?

How old are you?
I don’t know what caused you to make those promises ( like were you bargaining with God for things you want?), but it’s best not to do so.

Please understand that God is a loving Father who wants everything in your best interest, not some tyrant trying to make you do “stuff” in return for favors.

I would suggest you discuss this with the priest next time you’re at confession.

Peace 🙂

OK thank you that helped : )

I made those promises because I was saying those prayers for a particular cause-now I realize that there are many other ways to pray to help causes

Making promises to God implies the desire to “bind” God.

If you think it might be a sin, instead of asking people who are not priests, you should go to confession and discuss it with the priest there.

Too many people pray for something to God (for something to start, to stop, to not occur, to happen) and they forget to end the prayer with “not my will be done. but Yours”, and then complain wheb=n God does “not answer” their prayers. You night consider that.

You might want to consider writing these down in your prayer journal, or at least an appointment book.

God knows our frailties. He knows that our intentions are good, but that we are weak to complete them. He sustains us in our weakness.

What changed?

There is no time that God does not receive our prayers. Fulfill your promises, and say your prayers!

Today is a good day.

“But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day.” 2 Peter 3:8

God exists outside the space time continuum.

Of course, unless you are aware of any mortal sin. Mortal sin requires that you 1) know the gravity 2) consciously rebel against God (forgetting does not qualify)

Making prayer promises with God is basically in line with “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.”

I used to do prayer promises growing up and I still have times when I’m tempted to do so (I’m 20YO) but that’s not how God works. Jesus came to show us a new way to pray and love, and not to sacrifice to appease God

Thanks!
I realize that now (a little too late since Ive already made the promise!) Do you think God would still want me to say those prayers anyway?

If you are just rushing through them and not considering what they mean, no it’s not worth it. Honestly, I’d go to confession, say you promised these prayers but realize I shouldn’t of done that and just can’t keep up with it 🙂

No because you made these promises without full knowledge. Even if it was mortal you just confess it all the same! How old are you btw? Because depending on your age, the culpability is also lower because you may not have known in general. If you ever want to talk about this or other sins and if they are mortal or not I would suggest asking a Priest. I can try to help you the best I can but I’m not a Priest

Then yes, given your age you certainly don’t have full knowledge of this, so it’s fine. If you have any other sins you want to run by someone just to talk about how to overcome them or if they are bad you can PM me. But the best is to ask a Priest.

I can offer you advice on how to fight temptations to do impure things if that’s a struggle for you. If not, thank God it isn’t!
