I always wondered this and maybe you can help. Is there any proof of Jesus outside of the Bible? Anything recorded about his life and his death? If anything his death may have been recorded by the Romans or Jews but I was wondering where I might find this type of information in a non-religious format (for neutrality). Books? Websites? Anything you can think of that might point me into a direction will be appreciated.

I know that a jewish historian Josephus wrote about him being crucified by the romans.

**It is a good topic to increase our knowledge about Jesus. The full thirty years of his life is not known at all. That is not good.

After Jesus went away, the next three hundred (300) years are also not well known. They were spent in hiding. The gospels surfaced in the council Necine in year 325 .A.D. What went on during the 300 years?

After Jesus went away in 33 A.D. There is nothing from him till today. No news is good news?.

WE will look forward to all information about Jesus other than that in the BibleNT and Quran. **.

planten, are you working on a sequel to the Da Vinci Code ? 🤷

Maybe it’s about time for a topic - Did Mohammed, who the muslims claim was a prophet, actually exist? What independent proof outside of the qur’an and hadiths?

Personelly I don’t think he did. I’m sure there’s a link with the saracens who were a warrior tribe, thieves and enslavers, known of even around Christ’s time. They lived in and around what we know as Saudi Arabia today, but they weren’t the Arab pagans.

But, back on topic, there is independent references to Christ. Of course, to the Romans and gentiles, Jeruselem and its surrounds were not the centre of the empire; the Jews were tolerated only, and Christ’s ministry was within the Jewish community, it’s not surprising that there is not extensive proof. Plus it’s 2000 years ago.

It all depends on what proof you need; and proof of what.

I haven’t always believed a man named Jesus existed. I was raised with a Christian background, went to a Christian school in my youth but fought religion tooth and nail. As I got older and more and more biblical history began to become uncovered by archeologists I started to except that Jesus did exist but as a man, as a prophet. It has never settled with me that he was (is) divine and I am mostly seeking evidence if he truly existed and of his divinity other than the bible. I look at the Bible and any other religious texts (Qur’an, etc) as a history book of doctrine faith written by man. It may be the word of God and I am not debating that but still at the end of day was written by man and man is fallible. Because of this I have always had a hard time submitting to religion based on blind faith but like history I like to gain insight from different perspectives before making a decision. I know information will be limited due to the time period but I am hopeful some items were recorded.

This is a good example to why I am asking.

Fair question and something I would like to research as well.

** It is no use shifting the burden from Jesus to Muhammad. If such is done, the case of Muhammad is quite recent (only 1400 years). Then you may deny that there was any Roman Catholic king Caesor whose forces were badly defeated by the Muslim warriors. It will then relieve us Muslims from any blame of defeating the Roman catholic soldiers.

A person has raised a genuine question about Jesus. He is interested in Jesus, not in Muhammad. That question can be answered in some good gentle way. It may not be spread into other fields to avoid the issue. In all this matter, Muhammad is on the side of the Roman Catholics. Roman Catholics are trying to put Muhammad in doubtful existence.

In Persian they say: “Mann chih may Suraayam wa tamboorah e mann chih may may Suraayad.”

Meaning: “What I am singing and what my harp is dishing out?” meaning “What tune I am trying to play and what (different) tune (tone) my harp is playing?”**

I think planten might be referring to Emperor Heraclius who ruled the Eastern Roman Empire and the Battle of Yarmouk.

Try the Early Church Fathers. Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr, Polycarp, Tertullian, etc.
Here is something that might also help.

If you read the Roman historian Tacitus’ historical book the “Annals” he says this about the Chirstians after the burning of Rome:
Consequently, to get rid of the report, Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians [or Chrestians; see below] by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judaea, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome, where all things hideous and shameful from every part of the world find their centre and become popular. Accordingly, an arrest was first made of all who pleaded guilty; then, upon their information, an immense multitude was convicted, not so much of the crime of firing the city, as of hatred against mankind. Mockery of every sort was added to their deaths. Covered with the skins of beasts, they were torn by dogs and perished, or were nailed to crosses, or were doomed to the flames and burnt, to serve as a nightly illumination, when daylight had expired.
Many of the cruel things that Nero liked to do to Christians was to crucify them along the streets, throw pitch on them, and then light them on fire. While they were burning he would taunt them by saying, “Now you are truly the light of the world!..”

During the seige of Jerusalem the Romans had these catapults(balista) that could launch a stone weighing a talent(75-85 lbs.) up to a quarter-mile. The stones weren’t enough to breach the walls but what the Romans would do is launch the stones against one of the towers and the stones would shatter. The purpose was anti-personnel; to injure the people with these shards of rock.

Well, the Jewish soldiers on the walls, it was their job to warn the people when the Romans had launched these stones by saying “aben”, meaning “the stone is coming.”

Well many times when the Romans launched a stone these guards would not yell “aben” but “ben”-meaning “the son is coming!” They were mocking the Christians about the second coming!

If this isn’t proof of the real historical Jesus and the things that he taught, I don’t know what is.

yes , holy Quran & hadith.
Anything recorded about …death?
well , he did not die . He will die after his second coming.

Jesus (pbuh) is a religious figure . So , why you are interested to know about him from non-religious source ??

This is false. He did die. There are Roman records, such as the one I provided from Tacitus who lived in the first century, along with Flavius Josephus, which tell of His crucifixtion under Pontius Pilate.

The problem with Islam’s notions of Christ is that Muhammed received his ideas about Christ from a heretical sect called the “Nazoraens”. Their theology adhered more to gnostic notions of Christ than to the truth of who He really was.

Well you just proved a reason to why I am asking. As a Muslim you believe Jesus was not crucified but Christians believe he was. So that’s two different viewpoints, from two different religions, painting two different pictures. The people who write religious documents are going to write any account the way that best suits their viewpoint of the situation. Hence to why we have some many religions and denominations of those religions because they interpret or accept only what they want of religious doctrine. So you find a 3rd viewpoint and at this time it could have been from the Jews or Pagans who witnessed Christ’s crucifixion. They will tend to be a neutral party because they don’t have a tie to Jesus or his religious following and may paint a more neutral viewpoint of the event or maybe they won’t. Plus there is no harm in researching the past and in ways allows a person to learn more about a religion.

From what I read and seemed to understand in your post it dealt more about the persecution of Christians and not about Jesus. What I am looking for and it may have been provided already from other posters (still looking up the links provided) is a written account of the crucifixion of Jesus or his life outside of a religious text.

Hi, The GreyPilgrim.

There’s plenty of evidence for Jesus outside the NT. I recently bought a book by JP Holding (I keep bringing him up in threads, but he’s just so good!!!) called “Shattering the Christ-Myth”. A section of the book is devoted to the references to Jesus by Josephus, Tacitus, Pliny the Younger, and more. His site has articles on the same topic: www.tektonics.org

Also, don’t get discouraged if you don’t expect Jesus to be all over the historical record. Jesus wasn’t an amazingly popular dude. He wasn’t a politician, he wasn’t royalty. He was a poor Jewish preacher, who was crucified! (The worst kind of punishment, a total disgrace.) I imagine 1st century historians saw him as just another wacky preacher.

I’m always fascinated by the references. The re-constructed Josephus reference is amazing. What’s also interesting, is when you look at Pliny the Younger’s reference to Jesus, he said his followers got together to eat “harmless food”. (Obviously trying to dispel rumors that Christians were cannibals. Good proof for the Eucharist!)

God Bless.
