Just because they aren’t divorced doesn’t mean that they are happy or that they are better people than those that are divorced. There is a good chance that staunch Catholics stay together because divorce is against the church teachings. Thomas Merton abandoned his wife and child. Is he a bad person?You know, the real test could be done just comparing Catholics that frequent the sacraments versus those who don’t. In other words, you wouldn’t be comparing people in other religions. Compare the divorce rates for those who go to communioin twice a week along with confession once a month with those who go to communion twice a year.
Good point, that is why I added that we need to look at the entire catholic morality list, not just the marriage morals. It can be time consuming, mentally exhausting and a long process that can cost if you can afford it in Chicago about 900 bucks just for starters. It can go up from there for a nullity. Not that this should deter anyone since they wont refuse anyone who is unable to pay. Thank you to all who replied. It appears the concensus is that there is no conclusive proof that Catholics are more moral. One reason given is that Catholics participate in the sacraments at different levels of frequency and there is a mixed bag of saints and sinners sonce all are allowed in the church. Another point was that there are some great saints but still there is not empirical evidence that the average catholic is any more moral than anyone else. Another point was that it is hard to measure morality. I think it would be a heck of a tool to convince others to join the Church if there was clear evidence that it would result in a deeper faith resulting in moral actions, but it appears this proof is lacking.I understand the doctrine that the Roman Catholic religion is the one Church founded by Jesus Christ and as such it provides all the means of grace whereby man can best acheive union with God. I am wondering, because of this, is there conclusive proof readily available showing that Roman Catholics are the most moral of people?
I feel that the lack of proof plus true teachings and opportunity for growth combined is an awesome combo of reasons to join the Church. If we only have true teachings and well formed saints in the Church, that would definitely call attention and get people looking. But that alone I do not think will keep people in the Church. Simply because there isn’t a home for everyone and that if anyone does stay, the Church would no longer but a collection of saints only =P. The way it is now, people aren’t drawn in a sensational way in masses, but God is patient and only plans the best for his loved ones. Thus while we are called to work hard to sanctify ourselves within the Church, in order to uplift the whole Church, we can also trust that God is making the Church into the perfect instrument to call the whole world right now already.Thank you to all who replied.
