Proof that God is Good

Hi,

I’ve been up all night on the computer, but I’ve been working my butt off. I came up with a proof that God is good. Here it is. Can you check it for me to see if it is true?

God is the best. No one is better than Him. If anything were better than Him, then that thing would be God, and He wouldn’t be. It seems silly, but it’s an irony that makes a point, and gets you to think about what God is, and why He is good. If anything else could be more good than God, that would be God, and God would not be God. If God is not good, then everything else in the universe is not good. Because God created everything that exists, besides Himself. If anything in the universe is good, then God must be good, because He created it. So the question is, is anything in the universe good? Well, love is good. Creativity is good. Justice is good. Hope is good. Faith is good. Mankind is good. Life is good. Beauty is good. Science is good. Art is good. Music is good. Poetry is good.

So God must be good.

Yes.

And then there’s that prayer: God is good, God is great; let us thank HIm for our food, Amen.

This is very similar to one of the ways Aquinas’ proves God’s existence. Read “The fourth way…” found near the bottom of the page → newadvent.org/summa/1002.htm

*So the question is, is anything in the universe good? * IMO This would be the weak point in the argument if one has to argue that everything created is good. For it is possible to point out things that are not good in the universe. Satan is presumably not good; sin is not good etc; some music, poetry, art etc is not good (in the moral sense). Further if mankind is good why does he need to be saved. So I would say that your argument fails here by claiming that the universe is good.
