Not sure if this is the right forum for these questions, but:

When meeting an Abbot, is it appropriate to kiss his ring as you would the ring of a Bishop?

How should you address a monk if you’re not sure if he’s a priest or a brother?
 
I haven’t seen anyone kiss an abbot’s ring - but I don’t know if that is traditional or not.

The easiest way to address an abbot is “Fr. Abbot”.

Not much you can do to tell the difference between a brother and a priest monk (except when they are vested for Mass).

About all you can do is call them all one or the other - and they’ll correct you when appropriate.

The abbot’s jurisdiction, if he is a “mitered Abbot” is only for his community. I doubt anybody today would expect you to kiss a ring – IF he wears one.

How about saying: “Brother – or is it Father?”
 
I have seen pictures of Abbots, read about Abbots and would not know much I caould say to an Abbot. Maybe , before I die, I will see an Abbot. But tipping your hat wouldn’t be a bad thing to do. :tiphat:

The most imporatnt question: how do you address the Abbot?

Three important rules to remember when visiting the Abbey:
  1. Don’t run with scissors!
  2. Don’t chew gum with your mouth open!
  3. Pray
 
Proper behavior at a monastery is prayer and penance.

Monk’s can still be called Brothers even if they are Priests, in the Friary by me the majority of the friars are Priests but they still call one another Brother and sign themselves as Brother.

But I like to call them Father 🙂

I’m fairly new and just started RCIA.

I suppose nobody will say this. But I think it should be said.

When visiting a monastery, please dress conservatively. If you are a woman (or young woman) visiting, please dress in a manner that is not revealing. This includes any teenagers coming with you.

Actually, I am somewhat surprised at how some women dress sometimes at Mass. Our Priests are human. They and their vows deserve respect. Not temptation.
