**Oh I love this thread because its really hard for me, being a High School student and being in a public school environment and dressing modest. But for me - my parents raised me to respect myself not only in the way I dress but also in how I act.

So for me - modesty is just getting the right size for your body whether your a small, medium or large. And for pants something not to tight but also not to baggy - for me I buy pants some what tight because as the day goes on they loosen up! 🙂 I personally take pride in what I wear everyday and I think its fun… And that’s why when I go to college I am planning on studying Fashion Design and really promote modesty.

Also I am not a big fan of long skirts, I think either a little above the knee or slightly below it. 👍

Good for you, Marie! I hope you succeed in bringing modest fashion to more women, particularly those of our own age (adolescent to young adult), with the Grace of God. 👍

In reference to the above cited websites concerning women"s dress.

Our Holy Father will teach us the way…as he has been instructed to do by Jesus himself…

Anyone else trying to say what Jesus “wants” from us is not to be paid much attention. There are those out there that are taking different parts of different popes in an effort to validate their own views and opinions. These people should be watched very closely. You will know them by their fruits. Are they putting forth good fruits or are they causing confusion?

There are those out there in what is supposed to be leadership positions expressing their own views as being what God wants us to do. If God has not wanted women to use their minds, we would not have one, but some of their views are that, all women need to learn is how to sew, cook and take care of children.). They are not to be educated in any other form. Another one of these erroneous views is that the Holocaust never happened.

I see alot of misrepresentation in what is taught these days

Don’t ask man for the answer, you will get 50,000 different views. Pray and ask God and He alone will tell you the truth. He will do the cleaning of the fish we gather for him.

And don’t put alot of faith in any of these websites where the authors are not willing to speak publicately or identify themselves such as the views from the above sites.
BE WATCHFUL AND PRAY:D

Jimmeny.

Are people on here ever gong to stop fussing about skirts? I wear a skirt every day of my life. I garden, go to work, scrub floors, chase and change grandkids, run at the park, hike, camp and can ride a bicycle in a skirt.
If you don’t want to wear a skirt, ok. But please don’t try to tell anyone that they are limiting.
Now, that being said, when I hang upside down on the trapeze on the babies swingset, I do wear shorts under my skirt.😉

P.S. To Maggiemay2u:

You have photographs from the time of Jesus? 👍

This has been said in some ways here, but again:
  1. We are always responsible for our choices. There’s no way to make a poor choice not our choice.
  2. God is infinitely just and infinitely merciful.
We don’t commit mortal sins by accident. We don’t sin at all without intent or at least intentional negligence at some point (by intentional negligence I mean choosing not to care about something; this is properly called culpable negligence). But at the same time, we can’t escape responsibility for what we chose to do. If a man dresses provocatively and a woman lusts for him (let’s invert it for once - it happens too), the man is responsible for leading others to sin and for caring more about his ego than about the spiritual safety of others (drunk driving is a good illustration). The woman is responsible for *accepting *the lustful thoughts or sensations out of her choice, to the extent she chose. Neither of them can say, “it’s not my responsibility.”

Similarly, if a drunken driver hits a speeder and the accident would have been avoided if either the drunken one had been sober or the other one had not been speeding, then they are both responsible. A court should sentence both of them.

If the accident couldn’t have been avoided even if the speeding one had not been speeding, then he simply did not bring the accident about. Which doesn’t mean he wasn’t speeding. He deserves a ticket but not a car crash sentence.

In the unlikely case that the accident couldn’t have been avoided even if the drunken one had been sober, then it is simply not right to blame the drunken one for causing the accident. He deserves a sentence for drunk driving, but not for the accident. The speeder deserves a sentence for causing the crash - but obviously had nothing to do with the drinking in the first place.

As you see, there is no golden ticket to lumping all the responsibility on one single driver and no golden ticket to freedom just because the other one did something wrong too. At least not in a good law, in which there are no awful loopholes or biased judges.

There are no loopholes or bias in Christian morality. Regardless of where we think the lines are.

Can someone tell me what the proper dress and behavior is for Catholic Men?
The same as for women: 1. No tempting, 2. No choosing your pride over legitimate concerns for temptation posed to other people, 3. Care and precaution if you know it’s needed.

As for your other points:

From the fact that God cares about our souls follows that He cares about the choices which we make, which includes situations when we choose to tempt others or when we put our pride above people’s perhaps somewhat sensitive eyes. This means it’s not about specific clothes, but it is very much about the choices involved.

Needles and threads aren’t overly expensive. Clothes with holes can be fixed. If one has no clothes other than those in bad disrepair that can’t be fixed on one’s own, one goes to a charity and sees if there aren’t any. Even before charities, one visits second-hand shops in which one can buy even designer clothes for a couple of bucks if one is “lucky”. People who go there more often and look more carefully have better odds.

Examples with needy situations are not great because human creativity is no small force and modest women have gone a long way making decent use of modern fashions. There are many different ways in which clothes can be made more decent without much effort or expense.

In many cases I suppose women think it’s just pretty and they don’t realise it was made to be “sexy” and they don’t feel they should be told what to wear. In other cases they want to be sexy and think it’s their right. I think it’s the same for men.

Statistics do show that rape is prevalent in men’s prisons, but not in women’s prisons.

Rape isn’t about sex. It is about asserting domination. It is a filthy sin.

Rape has little to do with modesty, excepting that a lack of modesty can allow someone to rationalize their objectification of the person and cements a warped view that makes people into things or sexuality into a vehicle by which competitions and power struggles are played out. That is no excuse, though.
As I stated in a previous post in this thread Rape is about Power.
While seductive dress code may be a contributing factor in a woman being regrettably raped by a inhumane selfish male rapist. Most psycho-analytical studies don’t conclude that suggestive clothing is the over-riding factor and cause of rape.
In the majority of rape cases whether the victim is a woman, man, or child the rape assailant is often under the influence of drugs or alcohol. International statistics in United States and Canada a woman, man, or child is victimized by rape every three minutes. The continent of Africa has the world’s highest rape statistics with a woman, man or child becoming a rape victim every fourteen seconds. Appalling to say the least is an understatement. If you are reading this and are (“not”) a rape victim,
please be non-judgmental. If your wondering what most rape victims go through and the heavy cross they carry rest of their lives, I invite you to read the following: centurionguard57.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Matthew Chap 5 Verses 3-10

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 3)

Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land. (Verse 4)

Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted. (Verse 5)

Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill. (Verse 6)

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (Verse 7)

Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God. (Verse 8)

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. (Verse 9)

Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

I suggest proprer dress and behavior for Catholic men needs to be addressed, too.

This kind of thing pops up every so often around here, sad to say.

CatholicPlanet is of the same genre as Fisheaters.com only moreso. CatholicCulture.org considers such sites to be RED, or dangerous, for their lack of fidelity to Rome and the Holy Father.

The Rhodes website is clearly somebody opinion, as it is run on Geocities. It, too, has dangerous statements that are not faithful to the Magisterium.
Fisheaters, apart from the forums, is a great website. Obviously this catholicculture website is worthless if it actually questions fisheaters fidelity to Rome.

I mean who is Catholicculture? A group of lay folk? Why even give them an iota of authority?

I think it’s a great topic, maybe you could start a new thread on it?

Just because most discussions like this one are about women, it doesn’t mean that men don’t have their own standards of modesty to keep up with.

For some reason, I’m not sure why, it just seems like there’s consistently more of an issue with modest women’s clothing. Or maybe it’s because the breaches in modesty in women’s dress are more egregious and widespread than those of men?

Anyhow, yeah. Start that thread and I’ll reply to it. 👍

I just came across this verse from the OT - Deuteronomy 22:5. “A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God.”

Although this is not one of the items from the OT that HMC has said is a Commandment and that we need to follow, this does show that He is concerned about keeping the gender’s roles (even in fashion) separate. Now, I’m not going to be confessing this at my next confession - since I sometimes wear pants - but I thought it interesting since it is not commonly considered as any more than a small “t” tradition among men.

I wonder if there is a special section in hell for women who wear slacks to mass, hold hands during the Our father and like the hymn “Morning has Broken”?😃

There is an “Ask the Apologist” on that verse.

I just read the “Ask a Apologist” stance on the “proper dress”. He makes a very valid point. I truly think this “dress issue” is more of a transsexual thing. Although, we do have to look at “intentions”, ex: Joan of Arc.She did dress like a man, cut her hair, putting herself out to be a man, the whole works…but was she desiring to be a man or fulfilling God’s call? As we all know she was burned at the stake.and later canonized a saint. This was probably due to some very strict (and misinterpreted) version of the same verse.I’m sure the people who lit the fire wish they hadn’t been so narrow minded.😃

Thanks to the Apologist for clearing this up. Maybe we can all go on living now…😃

Or we could join in the new thread about Proper Dress and Behaviour for Catholic Men.

Or we could start other relevant threads eg

is short hair for women and long hair for men acceptable?
if it is okay for women to wear sandals (with or without tights) to work/Mass why shouldn’t it be the same for men?
is this a serious post or should it have a joke smiley?

Since we as Catholics strive to do our best to please the Lord, I thought most of us women would be very intrested in reading these articles. I know it opened my eyes a lot.

catholicplanet.com/women/index.htm
Catholicplanet is not a reliable source of Catholicism, the author freely mixes his opinons with Church teaching. See the current commentary posted at Catholicculture.org. on his topic.
Amen to that. I don’t trust anything from that site.

** Thought of Cardinal Bevilacque**
Yes, God accepts us as we are, but the church is a sacred space where God Himself is sacramentally present.
👍

I think you should also be neat and clean if possible…Who wants to set next so someone that smells bad?

I certainly don’t and I am not saying this to be mean…Oder’s have a very profound effect on some people

I hate it when some woman comes in wearing half a bottle of perfume, or a man with too much after shave…it is very inconsiderate. Some people have severe allergies

Because men and women are not the same. Once you are able to grasp this one concept you won’t have so many questions.
