Proper gift to give Goddaughter on her Baptism?

Hi, All!

The title of this thread pretty much says it all. I’ve been given the great honor of being my cousin’s new daughter’s Godmother, and I’m at a loss as to what to give her as a gift. What is customary? I’ve never been a Godmother before! If it matters, her name is Cecelia.

I got my youngest god daughter a white teddy bear with a Baptism shell. I haven’t figured out how to make the picture show up using my phone, but if you google Catholic Teddy Bears, and select images, it’s about half way down the page.
 
Your time.
The example of you living your faith as she grows up.
Offer to take her for breakfast after Sunday Mass once in a while, just to talk when she is older.
Have a Mass said for her every year on the anniversary of her Baptism. You can do THAT while she’s still a toddler!

We gave a small cash gift and a children’s Bible. We also give small gifts throughout the year - birthday, Christmas, and baptism day - prayer cards and little books about the Faith. And we pray for him often. 🙂
 
Thank you, everyone! I appreciate the helpful suggestions. Of course, I’ll be praying for my Goddaughter and giving her my time, sending her cards and things in the mail, but it’s nice to also give a material something on the actual Baptism day. These are all good ideas! Thank you! Being a Godmother is very exciting for me.
 
When I was baptized, my godparents gave me a baptismal cross - a cross with the profile of a girl kneeling. When I was confirmed, they gave me a crucifix. This meant a lot to me.

I have two godchildren. I gave my nephew a Bible. (Can’t remember what I gave my niece.) I try to get things that will enrich their faith but still be fun - such as children’s books about the saints, nice Catholic children’s stories (e.g. “The Weight of a Mass”; “Joseph and Chico: The Story of Pope Benedict XVI as Told By a Cat”, etc.), holy cards with their patrons, etc. I am thinking about getting them a Lego set that’s a priest celebrating Mass.
 
We gave our Godson a small holy water font for his room.
 
I gave my youngest goddaughter her baptismal candle. Purchased a beeswax pillar and decorated it with baptismal symbols. Engraved her name and the date of her baptism on it and that’s what was used during the ceremony rather than the taper normally handed out by the parish.
 
Assuming your Goddaughter is an infant, a cradle cross makes a nice gift. If the parents do not have a baptismal gown, you could offer to purchase that as a gift. Then she could use it for her children:).

My role in baptisms has been different. One of the works I have found most fulfilling has been knitting fine lace Christening Gowns for those expecting babies. The most deli cate of work… We line them and ribbon them and know that then they are carefully folded away in tissue for the next baby…

One was bought by a collector and is now on a Victorian antique doll in a museum

What makes is all the more poignant is that they earn money that feeds the tiny babies my family save.
