Proper response to liturgical abuse

You know, if you see a liturgical abuse occur, as in a direct violation of the laws of liturgy, I don’t think you should go online and tell everyone on the internet about it. Send a note to the Bishop, and let it be, and ONLY if it is a serious abuse, not that someone sat at the wrong time or someone didn’t get the words of a prayer right accidentally.

If you go online going on and on about abuses you almost give the impression (in my opinion) that you go to Mass to find abuses.

My understanding of this forum is that it is a place where people can come together in order to share, discuss, whatever.

When I first came here I was so appalled at the abuses mentioned here. However, thanks to the forum and in particular its members, I was able to learn about various abuses in my own parish and was inspired to relearn my catechism.

Not discussing these abuses can leave some people wondering if they’re out of touch with their faith rather than, as often happens, their priest.

By discussing them we can at least help people realize its not them that are weird!!

However, a number of things I have seen cited as abuses were not abuses. You have to be very careful.

Yes. However, the main problem is that many times bishops are rather indifferent. Sometimes it is them who encourage the abuses themselves, though they obviously aren’t trying to be evil. This is the case where I live.

Make sure that what you’re talking about is actually an egregious violation of the rubrics and norms, and not just saying “I don’t like this” about a practice the Church permits, before you call something “an abuse”.

However, a number of things I have seen cited as abuses were not abuses. You have to be very careful.

It seems to me that often people come here to verify that what they are seeing is an abuse, and not just something unfamiliar, before writing to their bishop. :twocents:

As a revert, I tend to keep my mouth shut and make sure if what I am seeing is indeed abuse, or just something I don’t like. That is key. We do not want to act like Protestants coming to complain to the preacher every time he said something we didn’t like. I had plenty of those as a Baptist minister.
The key, I believe, would be to ask a question politely. In a non-threatening way. The priest has a place of honor that we are to respect, whether we like it or not.

You sure are painting with a broad brush here. When I was a revert, I avoided nearly all liturgical abuses by attending the Traditional Latin Mass offered in my area. Although I disagree with it, as far as I am concerened, this is the only place you will find the actual catholic faith preached and practiced.

I hear the actual Catholic faith preached and practiced very well in vernacular masses.
