Dear brethren,

I am attempting to celebrate solemn vespers on feast days without a any ordained clergy with a few aquaintances at a local Catholic university. I would like to use Incense or any other nice smelling substance, such as an oil lamp (supposedly this was used at some point in church history for its scent properties).

Can anyone tell me what the proper role of a censer for a lay person?

I know that within certain rites the non-ordained are only to use a hand censer and not the one with chains.

here is a link to the booklet so you can have an idea of why I would use one.

Vespers for the Dedication of St Michael, Archangel

Blessed art Thou in the firmament of heaven: and worthy of praise, and glorious for ever !

I’m not sure your can celebrate solemn Vespers unless you have three ordained clergy, or at least two servers who can be assistance to the celebrant, a choir, incensation of the altar, etc.

If you just mean reciting Vespers in a community of laypeople … I’m not sure where the rubrics would call for incense at all. Usually in Solemn Vespers the priest celebrant incenses the altar during the Magnificat … that would not apply in your case it seems.
