This is not about sex, per se. 😛 My question is more philosophical. How should men treat women? Should they be able to tell a woman what to do, in a marriage, as guidance, or should it be completely mutual all the time, and should women be allowed to tell me what to do? Should men always propose marriage or could a woman do it? Is it wrong for a woman to support a man financially when they’re married (as I believe Sirach says) or does the Church feel differently on that? Questions like that. 🙂

These are all good questions that are very relevent to our culture.

I like what Steve Wood says about these things: People (husbands and wives too) thrive when they are in service to others.

Mt 22: 37, 39 …You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind. …You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Eph 5: 25-28 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. So (also) husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

'Nuff said?

Eph 5:21 Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.

I would say it depends on the circumstances. The captain of the ship does not tell the chef how to make dinner but he probably does tell him to make it and when to have it ready. There will be times when you would advise her and times when she might advise you. If your best friend in the whole world gives you advise, will you spurn it simply because she is a woman?

Generally, a woman will work things out so that the man will propose when she wants him to. We chase them until they catch us.

I am not sure how the Church feels on the matter but I see no grevous sin in a woman being the bread winner and the man providing for the home. The Church does not seem to have any problem with two income families and even working around the house is WORK. Try it someime with a couple two or three small children if you don’t think so. Marriage is a partnership, both parties contribute. There is very little me and you and a whole bunch of us and we. Done properly, it makes each of you more than the sum of the individuals. 1+1= alot more than 2.

Of course, the devil is in the details.
