Propers for St. Philomena

Does anyone know if there are propers for the Feast of the Discovery of the Sacred Body of Saint Philomena, 25th May, Catacombs of St. Pricilla in Rome? I’ve tried contacting the Sanctuary in Mugnano, where the majority of her relics are located, but I’ve gotten no answer. Propers for any of her feasts in the Extraordinary Form or Ordinary Form are welcome. Thank you.

when they updated the saints calendar back in the 60s i believe they took her out. that is probably why you can’t find any. I wonder if there are any lectionaries and such from before that might have them in there. best of luck:thumbsup:

There are not. During the brief period of time when her Mass was permitted to be celebrated in certain places, the Common of Virgins was used. She was never on the General Roman Calendar or anything like that (nor in the Martyrology), and in 1961 she was ordered to be removed from local calendars where she appeared, so she does not have any celebration in the modern Mass or the 1962 Mass.
 
Thanks, Mark. I was just curious about propers/commons at places like her shrine in Mugnano, etc. Are they still allowed to celebrate her feasts? I imagine they’d have some sort of indult, but I can’t seem to get an answer from them; so I just wondered if anyone here knew. Thanks, again.

Ah, that I don’t know. My guess would be no, although it would not shock me if they did it anyway in the face of an official blind eye. There would still be no special propers, though; just like if your parish is St. Obscurius’, you get to celebrate his feast day, but you don’t get to make up propers and pretend they are in the Roman Missal. Sometimes there are propers approved only for one country printed in a supplementary section at the back of the Missal, but this appears never to have been done with Philomena.
 
My parish celebrated a Mass in honor of St. Philomena last night, May 25, complete with a guest deacon, the singing of “Inno a Santa Filomena” and a first-class relic which we venerated afterwards.

Our pastor has a special devotion to St. Philomena, there is a statue of her in our sanctuary specially commissioned about three years ago. If you wish, I can ask him about any propers that might have been used.

Yes, that would be wonderful! Also, do you have the music to “Inno a Santa Filomena”?
 
I spoke to the priest tonight, and he said there were no propers available for St. Philomena. Likewise, he said she is not on the calendar anywhere that he is aware of. So if there was a prayer said then I guess it was from the Common of Virgins. I doubt they ad-libbed anything as my priests believe very much in saying the black and doing the red.

Stand by for my choir director, who said he would scan and send me the hymn, I will post it when I have it.
 
I believe for St. Philomena, the reason that many use to celebrate her feast that I read some time back on some website devoted to her, was that not every saint/martyr is listed in the martyrology, and thus they use the appropriate Common to celebrate a Mass in her honor., following the rules for celebrating any minor saint.

I am not entirely sure about the correctness of the reasoning there, because it seems to me that while devotion to an unknown/little known saint not mentioned in the liturgical books might be spread, I am not sure whether it is licit to have a public cult in the form of a Mass said in the person’s honor. IBut I have no clue – it just would seem strange given the rules for celebrating blesseds, but perhaps it is permitted after miracles and so forth. I suppose Philomena’s case is complicated by the fact that there are miracles attributed to her, and her cult was authorized for some time.
 
Thank you to all! Yes, St. Philomena’s case is interesting, given the devotion a few popes had to her.
