Prophecies from Every Deuterocanonical Book

Each of the Deuterocanonical books has prophetic testimony to prove that they are from God. Here are some examples:

Wisdom
  1. Wisdom 2:1, 12-22
“[1] For they have said, reasoning with themselves, but not right… [12] Let us therefore lie in wait for the just man, because he is not for our turn, and he is contrary to our doings, and upbraideth us with transgressions of the law, and divulgeth against us the sins of our way of life. [13] He boasteth that he hath the knowledge of God, and calleth himself the son of God. [14] He is become a censurer of our thoughts. [15] He is grievous unto us, even to behold: for his life is not like other men’s, and his ways are very different.

[16] We are esteemed by him as triflers, and he abstaineth from our ways as from filthiness, and he preferreth the latter end of the just, and glorieth that he hath God for his father. [17] Let us see then if his words be true, and let us prove what shall happen to him, and we shall know what his end shall be. [18] For if he be the true son of God, he will defend him, and will deliver him from the hands of his enemies. [19] Let us examine him by outrages and tortures, that we may know his meekness and try his patience. [20] Let us condemn him to a most shameful death: for there shall be respect had unto him by his words.

[21] These things they thought, and were deceived: for their own malice blinded them. [22] And they knew not the secrets of God, nor hoped for the wages of justice, nor esteemed the honour of holy souls.
  1. Wisdom 5:1-5
“[1] Then the righteous man will stand with great confidence in the presence of those who have afflicted him, and those who make light of his labors. [2] When they see him, they will be shaken with dreadful fear, and they will be amazed at his unexpected salvation. [3] They will speak to one another in repentance, and in anguish of spirit they will groan, and say, [4] ‘This is the man whom we once held in derision and made a byword of reproach – we fools! We thought that his life was madness and that his end was without honor. [5] Why has he been numbered among the sons of God? And why is his lot among the saints?’ ”

Sirach
  1. Sirach 24
[3] “I came forth from the mouth of the Most High, and covered the earth like a mist.”
[5] “Alone I have made the circuit of the vault of heaven and have walked in the depths of the abyss.”
[10] “In the holy tabernacle I ministered before him, and so I was established in Zion.”
[11] “In the beloved city likewise he gave me a resting place, and in Jerusalem was my dominion.”
[12] “So I took root in an honored people, in the portion of the Lord, who is their inheritance.”
[21] “Those who eat me will hunger for more, and those who drink me will thirst for more.”
[22] “Whoever obeys me will not be put to shame, and those who work with my help will not sin.”

These verses are spoken in the person of Christ and they prophesy His divinity and Incarnation, and the Eucharist. For the words “I came forth from the mouth of the Most High” refer to nothing other than the Word of God Christ.
  1. Sirach 35:18-20
“The Lord will not delay, neither will he be patient with them, till he crushes the loins of the unmerciful and repays vengeance on the nations; till he takes away the multitude of the insolent, and breaks the scepters of the unrighteous; till he repays the man according to his deeds, and the works of men according to their devices; till he judges the case of his people and makes them rejoice in his mercy. Mercy is as welcome when he afflicts them as clouds of rain in the time of drought.”

This is a prophecy of the Final Judgment.
  1. Sirach 39:8-10
“He will reveal instruction in his teaching, and will glory in the law of the Lord’s covenant. Many will praise his understanding, and it will never be blotted out; his memory will not disappear, and his name will live through all generations. Nations will declare his wisdom, and the congregation will proclaim his praise.”

This is a prophetic description of the great Teacher, our Lord.
  1. Sirach 40:11-16
“[11] All things that are from the earth turn back to the earth, and what is from the waters returns to the sea. [12] All bribery and injustice will be blotted out, but good faith will stand for ever. [13] The wealth of the unjust will dry up like a torrent, and crash like a loud clap of thunder in a rain. [14] A generous man will be made glad; likewise transgressors will utterly fail. [15] The children of the ungodly will not put forth many branches; they are unhealthy roots upon sheer rock. [16] The reeds by any water or river bank will be plucked up before any grass.”

This is a prophecy of life in the New Heaven and the New Earth, and how the wicked and their works will not be totally absent from it.
  1. Sirach 24:23, 30-33
“[23] All this is the book of the covenant of the Most High God, the law which Moses commanded us as an inheritance for the congregations of Jacob.”
[27] “It makes instruction shine forth like light, like the Gihon at the time of vintage.”
[32] “I will again make instruction shine forth like the dawn, and I will make it shine afar;
[33] “I will again pour out teaching like prophecy, and leave it to all future generations.”

These verses are spoken in the person of God and they prophesy the New Testament.
  1. Sirach 47:22
“And to Jacob he will give a remnant, and to the House of David a root from him.”

“Give praise to God who makes a horn sprout forth for the house of David, for God’s love endures forever.”
 
Tobit
  1. Tobit 13:11-23
“[11] Jerusalem, city of God, the Lord hath chastised thee for the works of thy hands. [12] Give glory to the Lord for thy good things, and bless the God eternal, that he may rebuild his tabernacle in thee, and may call back all the captives to thee, and thou mayst rejoice for ever and ever. [13] Thou shalt shine with a glorious light: and all the ends of the earth shall glory in thee. [14] Nations from afar shall come to thee: and shall bring gifts, and shall adore the Lord in thee, and shall esteem thy land as holy. [15] For they shall call upon the great name in thee. …

[21] The gates of Jerusalem shall be built of sapphire, and of emerald, and all the walls thereof round about of precious stones. [22] All its streets shall be paved with white and clean stones: and Alleluia shall be sung in its streets. [23] Blessed be the Lord, who hath exalted it, and may he reign over it for ever and ever, Amen.”
  1. Tobit 14:5-10
“[5] And at the hour of his death he called unto him his son Tobias and his children, seven young men, his grandsons, and said to them: [6] The destruction of Nineveh is at hand: for the word of the Lord must be fulfilled: and our brethren, that are scattered abroad from the land of Israel, shall return to it. [7] And all the land thereof that is desert shall be filled with people, and the house of God which is burnt in it, shall again be rebuilt: and all that fear God shall return thither. [8] And the Gentiles shall leave their idols, and shall come into Jerusalem, and shall dwell in it. [9] And all the kings of the earth shall rejoice in it, adoring the King of Israel.”

This is a prophecy of Christ, for this is who it means by “King of Israel,” and saying that all the kings of earth shall leave their idols and adore Him, which is fulfilled only in the Catholic Church. And this, “they shall come into Jerusalem,” figuratively speaks of the Catholic Church, which is the New Jerusalem. For the Gentiles have not all gone into the old Jerusalem and dwelt there, but in its fulfillment which covers the whole earth, and this is what the Scripture indicates.

Judith
  1. Judith 16:15-17
“[15] For the mountains shall be shaken to their foundations with the waters; at thy presence the rocks shall melt like wax, but to those who fear thee thou wilt continue to show mercy. [16] For every sacrifice as a fragrant offering is a small thing, and all fat for burnt offerings to thee is a very little thing, but he who fears the Lord shall be great for ever. [17] Woe to the nations that rise up against my people! The Lord Almighty will take vengeance on them in the day of judgment; fire and worms he will give to their flesh; they shall weep in pain for ever.”

This is a prophecy of the final Judgment. For the earth in its present form shall pass away, the mountains to their foundations and the rocks to nothing; and the good will be made great in God’s mercy, while the wicked will see fire and weeping forever.

Baruch
  1. Baruch 4:36—5:9
[36] Look toward the east, O Jerusalem, and see the joy that is coming to you from God! [37] Behold, your sons are coming, whom you sent away; they are coming, gathered from east and west, at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing in the glory of God. [1] Take off the garment of your sorrow and affliction, O Jerusalem, and put on for ever the beauty of the glory from God. [2] Put on the robe of the righteousness from God; put on your head the diadem of the glory of the Everlasting. [3] For God will show your splendor everywhere under heaven. [4] For your name will for ever be called by God, “Peace of righteousness and glory of godliness.”
[5] Arise, O Jerusalem, stand upon the height and look toward the east, and see your children gathered from west and east, at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing that God has remembered them. [6] For they went forth from you on foot, led away by their enemies; but God will bring them back to you, carried in glory, as on a royal throne. [7] For God has ordered that every high mountain and the everlasting hills be made low and the valleys filled up, to make level ground, so that Israel may walk safely in the glory of God. [8] The woods and every fragrant tree have shaded Israel at God’s command. [9] For God will lead Israel with joy, in the light of his glory, with the mercy and righteousness that come from him.
  1. Baruch 4:21-24
“[21] "Take courage, my children, cry to God, and he will deliver you from the power and hand of the enemy. [22] For I have put my hope in the Everlasting to save you, and joy has come to me from the Holy One, because of the mercy which soon will come to you from your everlasting Savior. [23] For I sent you out with sorrow and weeping, but God will give you back to me with joy and gladness for ever. [24] For as the neighbors of Zion have now seen your capture, so they soon will see your salvation by God, which will come to you with great glory and with the splendor of the Everlasting.”
  1. Baruch 2:34-35
“[34] I will bring them again into the land which I swore to give to their fathers, to Abraham and to Isaac and to Jacob, and they will rule over it; and I will increase them, and they will not be diminished. [35] I will make an everlasting covenant with them to be their God and they shall be my people; and I will never again remove my people Israel from the land which I have given them.”

This is a prophecy of the New Covenant, and God’s kingdom the Church, the New Israel, which alone is not diminished, which alone shall grow forever, and which is not removed from all the earth, but remains for all days.
 
1 Maccabees
  1. 1 Maccabees 14:21
“And the Jews and their priests decided that Simon should be their leader and high priest for ever, until a trustworthy prophet should arise.”

The trustworthy prophet is Jesus, who will take the place of the High Priesthood forever.
  1. 1 Maccabees 14:8-15
“[8] They tilled their land in peace; the ground gave its increase, and the trees of the plains their fruit. [9] Old men sat in the streets; they all talked together of good things; and the youths donned the glories and garments of war. [10] He supplied the cities with food, and furnished them with the means of defense, till his renown spread to the ends of the earth. [11] He established peace in the land, and Israel rejoiced with great joy. [12] Each man sat under his vine and his fig tree, and there was none to make them afraid. [13] No one was left in the land to fight them, and the kings were crushed in those days. [14] He strengthened all the humble of his people; he sought out the law, and did away with every lawless and wicked man. [15] He made the sanctuary glorious, and added to the vessels of the sanctuary.”

The city of God and how all evil shall be removed from it is prefigured in these words, which are in the description of Simon Maccabees’ high priesthood.

2 Maccabees
  1. 2 Maccabees 2:18
“For we have hope in God that he will soon have mercy upon us and will gather us from everywhere under heaven into his holy place, for he has rescued us from great evils and has purified the place.”
  1. 2 Maccabees 7
[9] “And when he was at his last breath, he said, ‘You accursed wretch, you dismiss us from this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up to an everlasting renewal of life, because we have died for his laws.’ ”
[11] “He said nobly, "I got these [hands] from Heaven, and because of his laws I disdain them, and from him I hope to get them back again.’ ”
[14] “And when he was near death, he said, ‘One cannot but choose to die at the hands of men and to cherish the hope that God gives of being raised again by him. But for you there will be no resurrection to life!’ ”
[23] “Therefore the Creator of the world, who shaped the beginning of man and devised the origin of all things, will in his mercy give life and breath back to you again, since you now forget yourselves for the sake of his laws.”
[29] “Do not fear this butcher, but prove worthy of your brothers. Accept death, so that in God’s mercy I may get you back again with your brothers.”
