In Luke 2:33-35, Simeon says to Mary, “And a sword will pierce your own soul too - so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.”

My question is, what are the secret thoughts (and why are they related to Mary)?

I always felt that in some way, it was related to the sacrament of reconciliation given to the church from Jesus to Mary.

Hebrews 4:12 also mentions secret thoughts (which may or may not be related).

I’ve never gotten a satisfying answer to the question. Does anyone know of any saints mentioning these versus?

Hi Sharayn,

If you go to John 3, 19, you have the following :
And this is the judgment. The light came into the world and men preferred the darkness to the light, because their deeds were bad. Indeed whoever does evil hates the light and does not come to the light, for fear that his deeds might be revealed.

But whoever acts in truth, comes to the light so that it may come to the light that his deeds are of God.
So you see, it is a question of belief and actilng according to your beliefs. Those who do not believe are revealed not to follow God’s path; whereas those who do believe are revealed to follow that path.
