On a largely Protestant message board I post on, the topic of the prophecies of the last Pope being the Antichrist have come up. This is rooted in some visions of St Malachy about the papacy that supposedly tell us how many popes there will be before the end. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? I’m not worried that the next Pope is going to be the Antichrist but I would like to have a better response than just telling people that its crazy.

St. Malachy’s papal prognostications have nothing to do with the anti-christ, he simply lists two more popes after this one - Glory of the Olive and Peter the Roman.

When people present material like this, the burden is on them to provide you with their citation- but they are certainly inadequately versed on St. Malachy’s work to comment on it properly.

The prophecy does not say that the last Pope is the Antichrist. This is a misinterpretation by people who may have never even read it.

Anyway why waste your time in what others say about the last Pope, when they don’t recognize him in the first place.

Why don’t they make up their mind, either the Pope is a threat to other faiths, or he isn’t.

If he isn’t a threat, then he will go away like the old man you say he is, so if he is of no importance, then why do you place so much importance in him ?

Anyway regardless, the Catholic Church has stood for 2000 years, and regardless, of who is the figure head, Jesus Christ is still the driver.

I don’t know what is going on here, plus your link didn’t lead me to a genuine web-site, nice one 👍

:D :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :clapping:  :rotfl: (...that's it. That's all I have.)

A fellow Catholic who claims to have certain divine gifts told me that the next pope will be the Antichrist. Personally I don’t know what to make of this. The Catholic position, naturally, has always been that the the Antichrist would not be a religious figure but instead some political or social leader.

I’m not really good on end times, so I’ll stop there 🙂

That should be your first clue to run and not walk…away.

I would make of it that your “fellow Catholic” can no longer be described in those terms, since we don’t claim to have divine gifts and we know the popes are chosen by the Holy Spirit so cannot be the Antichrist. They may turn out to be sinners or mighty peculiar, (for reasons best known to the Holy Spirit, and he’s not telling) but they cannot teach other than the truth about matters of faith and morals, and they cannot be the Antichrist.

If the prophecy doesn’t say the last pope will be the antichrist what does it say?

Don’t be hard on the Protestants on that board. Its not something they’re expressing a serious belief in. It was just brought up as something they had heard and were wondering about. Its actually a pretty friendly discussion on those boards. This came up as side topic in a post about people wishing Pope John Paul II good health.

Anyone can make the same incredible claims. Just don’t take such claims seriously.

It says what it always says; it offers individual comments on their reigns, their symbols of office which clearly will identify the man as part of the prophecy once his name is revealed. I repeat, it has no reference nor relevance to the antichrist.

The prophecy of St. Malachy simply gives us a listing of all the Popes from the year 1143 when Celestine II was elected, up the the last Pope, Petrus Romanus (Peter the Roman), after whom would come the Judgment. Each Pope was given a mystical description or title. For instance, Leo XIII (1878-1903) was known as* Lumen in Caelo* (Light of the Heavens); Pius X, Igni Ardent (Ardent fire); Pius XII(1939-58) was called Pastor Angelicus(The Angelic Shepherd); John Paul II was known as *De Labore Solis *(From the eclipse of the Sun). John Paul II is said to have been born during an eclipse. After the present Pope, the next one will be called Gloria Olivae(Glory of the Olives).

What is disputed by some is whether Gloria Olivae will be followed immediately by Petrus Romanus himself, or that there would be many intervening Popes before Petrus finally takes the chair.

Interesting, I was raised with a rather different view of the prophecy.

No one including Malachy ever said that after last pope he lists has served, will come the judgment. I actually have never read any reputable author who claimed that.

I also am unaware of any “dispute” about intervening popes between Glory of the Olive and Petrus Romanus so I do not know whose “interpretation” of the prophecy this is.

I was raised with the understanding that after Peter the method of church governance would change and then various other prophecies “kick in”.

I’m not doubting you at all, but I am curious to know what your source on thsi is because it sounds like interesting reason.

I read a fascinating novel by Michael D O’Brian called “Father Elijah, an Apocalypse” (1996 Ignatius press San francisco)
It is a great read and deals so Catholic about the antichrist.
As has been said the Pope can never be the antichrist as he is elected via the cardinals and guided by the Holy Spirit.
There have been many antichrists and all have come from the political world eg: Stalin, Hitler, Napoleon, Michael Jackson etc.
Trust in the Church and her leader!
God bless:bowdown:

My dad also told me about the last pope. Remember that someone also forsaw that the last Roman emperor was Romelius. Romelius was the founder of Rome. St. Peter was also our founder- The Roman Catholic.

What amazes me is that many people believe this ludicrious stuff regarding the so-called prophecy of Malachy on the last Pope! I will say that only God alone knows who the last Pope will be.

Padre Pio “The Rosary is the weapon.”

Malachy was a devout Catholic who loved his Church.

His list of future popes, though there is some evidence of fraud, is actually rather insightful. His prediction for John-Paul I, for example, was “De medietate lunae,” the pope “of the half moon.” That Pope was born in the Diocese of Belluno, “Beautiful Moon,” and was elected pope and died under a half moon.

He predicts two more popes after the current pope. There is no indication in his prediction about the last pope that that pope will be “anti-Christ.” That is concentrated anti-Catholic nonsense. Here it is…

In persecutione extrema S.R.E. sedebit Petrus Romanus, qui pascet oues in multis tribulationibus: quibus transactis ciuitas septicollis diruetur, & Iudex tremêdus iudicabit populum suum. Finis.

(In extreme persecution, the seat of the Holy Roman Church will be occupied by Peter the Roman, who will feed the sheep through many tribulations, at the term of which the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the formidable Judge will judge his people. The End.)

First of all, St. Malachy’s prophesy is not necisarily true to start with.

Second, I find it quite important to know that the man who made the prophecy remained a Catholic and actually became a saint.

Third, It does not say that the last pope will be the anti-Christ. What it says is that Peter the Roman will lead his people through trials and tribulations.(Paraphrasing) This does not mean he is the creator of trials and tribulations. It then says that the city with 7 hills will be destroyed and the judge will judge his people.

The whole prophecy is a dispute, but the reason for that statement is that, all popes named in the prophecy are numbered except Petrus Romanus. John Paul II is 110, and Gloria olivae is 111. Petrus Romanus has no number.
