Mormons claim that, because of certain things, they actually only weighed 50-60 pounds. I said so what? I used to carry 50-pound bags of dog food all the time. There is no way Joe could have carried 50 pounds and run three miles with it, especially on a bum leg, and especially fast enough to outrun three men
yeah, im sure you like me have had to do ruck marches with that weight. and just a forced march for 3-6 miles is hard enough. let alone running with it. 😃 and with a bad leg? its not going to happen at all. Peace 🙂

Joe was a false prophet. If any angels came to him, they were from Satan. We have already seen where angels who preach a different gospel from the Tue Gospel are not from God. That puts his false church in some serious problems.

When I converted to Mormonism, seeing that JS was a prophet was one of my biggest hurtles. The only way that I ended up getting past it was pure rationalisation. I had to reduce names like Moses and Daniel to names I was TOLD were prophets to rationalise that JS could be one too. Rationalisation is one of the Devil’s greatest tools. When I eventually studied my way out of it and things fell apart, I felt so duped and ignorant. I pray for those the missionaries teach that they will not be pushed into giving the answer they want to hear.

Yes. I did the same thing. I always thought myself not easily fooled.

Then I became LDS. I was very easily fooled

The thing is though, you and I were not duped by anything obvious. The missionary discussions are set up specifically to give you the “milk before the meat”. The sad part is, the meat is rancid and the milk is sugar coated fake imitation milk.

Yeah…they sure played on my weaknesses

Back to the point of this thread though, I can not seem to break the " a prophet is only a prophet when he’s acting like a prophet" mentality of the mormon advocates here. From what I remember, prophets were always prophets, even when they didn’t want to be. Like Jonah, he couldn’t run away from it once called. Even Jesus said a prophet would not be accepted in his home town. So a prophet cannot change his message, even when the crowd isn’t buying it. JS, was not a prophet, just someone pretending to be one when it suited him.

That’s why I tell my children (all of whom have genius-level IQs); Don’t ever think you are too smart to be fooled. It has nothing to do with being smart. It has everything to do with being vulnerable. Always keep reason as the primary source of truth. If a belief cannot comport with reason, then it cannot be true.

I have a genius-level IQ, but I was royally fooled by the Mormons because I was vulnerable and naive and ready to be fooled.

I, too, have a genius-lvel IQ and am well-educated. Yet, there I was, buying into all of it. I had never, in my life, smoked, drank alcohol, or did drugs, and I admit, the LDS prohibition of that sure attracted me

I think what also attracts many people as well is that the LDS have clean cut answers to lingering questions when most others leave it up to the mysteries of God or it being something beyond our tiny comprehension. (Ie the Trinity or Age of Accountability). When they give answers, you presume there is truth or revelation. But it turns out it is only opinion and guesses.

the Bible seems pretty clear that Joe could not have been a prophet
