Hi, I am talking with a Muslim friend about Prophets.

Is it necessary that all the Prophets are in Jesus genealogy?

What if they aren’t?

Do they have to be?

What if they are, and what is the significance that they are?

And finally, what is required to be a Prophet? I saw this link: catholic.com/quickquestions/in-biblical-times-what-did-a-person-do-that-made-him-considered-a-prophet-did-he-have

I have heard of major and minor Prophets, not so sure of the difference, but i am assuming these are different than the prophets we have today that Paul said some would have as a spiritual gift? This is one of my main questions.

Does that mean that these NT prophets after Jesus would have to give a sign: tell a future event or do a miracle? I guess even people possessed can do such a thing, or so i have read something like that, so other demonic things taking place would obviously cancel out any “positive” signs.

Thank you for your time!
I am so new at learning about these things.

No, they do not have to be in Jesus’ geneology. This is obvious if you take just the list of prophets whose works are included in the Old Testament (eg. Isaiah, Jeremiah, …). You will not find all of those names in Our Lord’s geneology as it is given in Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-38. One of the most famous of the OT prophets was Elijah, and he is not a part of Jesus’ geneology.

Only in the very broad sense that, as Jews, they could all trace their lineage back to Abraham and Sarah - or more specifically, Jacob, - can they be considered to share a geneology with Jesus.

It was foretold that the Messiah would be from the House of David (tribe of Judah). Some people consider David a prophet. That’s the only lineage that is important.

If Jesus (or anyone else) were to have been descended from the other notable prophets (Jeremiah, Elijah, etc) then those prophets themselves would need to share a common tribe and bloodline. We don’t know the bloodline of the prophets, but we’re pretty sure Elijah was not from Judah (he was probably from Gad, Benjamin, or Levi).

Unless, as Nita says, you go back to Abraham, which is a shared lineage for all Jews.

Not all the prophets were even from Israel. Balaam, for example.

Interesting… was he a from Jacob’s lineage, if not, how was he a prophet, if not Jewish (from Judah), or Abraham and Sarah?
