Proposed textbook implies abortion opposition is wrong, N. Carolina bishops warn [CNA]

Charlotte, N.C., Feb 13, 2010 / 05:04 pm (CNA).- A proposed school textbook that describes Roe v. Wade as a ruling against government oppression of rights should be opposed by Catholics, the bishops of North Carolina have said. They argue the text implies that opposition to abortion is wrong.

Bishop of Raleigh Michael F. Burbidge and Bishop of Charlotte Peter J. Jugis reported the problem with the textbook in a Feb. 11 letter to Catholics.

They said the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is considering a proposal for a revised textbook on Civics and Economics. The proposed text asserts that Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that mandated permissive abortion laws nationwide, is an example of the Supreme Court upholding rights “against oppressive government.”

They don’t mention if it is a high school text or a grammar school text, which is important. I think that ‘implies’ may be too strong a description in this instance.

So the “Supreme Court”, the same court that declared slavery was legal, the same court that declared that women could not vote, is the basis for your supporting the murder of innocent babies by abortion?

Sounds like something only a mass murderer like Hitler, or Stalin or Mao, not the mother of 2 beautiful girls, would support!

Actually, I think ‘implies’ is to weak a word. It is making a ** ‘statement’ ** IMHO. A ‘statement’ that a woman’s right out weights that of the child killed. Calling the government ‘oppressive’ of woman’s rights… denying the rights of life to the child ].

You can not exclude - to include - that is reverse discrimination. IMHO, to try to tie ‘woman’s rights’ as being valued OVER the rights of the baby…bringing about the killing of a baby abortion ]… does just that.

I see no reasonable excuse in trying to relate.this with the news article.

Is it even legal for the school system to say opposing something is wrong? (Freedom of Speech?)
