In that it states it holds true the teaching of the Apostolic Church and has neither added to or taken from the Apostolic Faith.

I don’t understand the connection between the heading you’ve chosen for the thread and the comments you’ve made in your Original Post.

Would you care to enlarge and clarify?

I was in a bit of a silly mood, and Id just read several posts saying things like remember there was only the catholic church for the first 1500 years before Luther came along yadda yadda yadda.

I read in someones sig that Protestant means to witness to or a witness for - something like that.

And I was thinking about Orthodoxy - and given the Schism ( the big one) they would claim to be witnessing to the true Apostolic church, not the catholic church with its evolving and additions and infallable pope and so on, and I though, does that make the Orthodox the first protestants, in that they were the first ‘‘to witness to’’ or stand witness for, the unadulterated truth as handed down by the apostles.

Thus making Luther only second in the line

Sorry, like I said, was just in one of those ya know, less concentrated moments.

Second? Not by a long shot! History is littered with those who sought to “improve” the gospel with their own insights. Arians, Albigensians, Manicheans, Gnostics, and so on.

Some of these groups got terribly basic principles dead wrong. Others (like the Eastern Orthodox) primarily broke off over power issues (with theological issues propped up to rationalize it).

Catholics do the truth no service if they pretend that Christendom ran smoothly for 1,500 years until Luther came along. They would do better to note that there have ALWAYS been protestors and splinter groups that broke off from the Catholic Church and that it is no accident that the vast majority of them have withered into nothingness after several generations or, at best, became irrevocably intwined with one specific culture to the detriment of the universal Great Commission.

Oh, I geddit. Well, here’s Morecambe and Wise who were never serious enough to consider Orthodoxy but who occasionally managed to be just as funny as Luther.
