As I am currently technically still a protestant (though in my heart I have stopped ‘protesting’ a long while ago) am I in mortal sin?

Not that I know of … come home Eruvande 🙂

Simply visit your local Catholic Church and speak to the priest or ask a lay person how to contact the priest and they should guide you through everything. 🙂

Remember, He waits for us night and day at the tabernacle, he will not reproach us for our crimes, he will not throw our sins in our face, what he will do is to wash us with the blood of his wounds, he loves us very much. go to him, go as you are; it does not matter as long as you go. Christ wants to give you much 🙂

God Bless

Thank you for reading

Technically you’re still Protestant, since it’s just a term for a non-Catholic Christian. It’s not a pejorative or anything. I would probably wait until after Easter’s over to talk to someone about RCIA as they’re probably really busy right now.

Just being a Protestant is not a sin. I would say that you are a Catholic candidate or catechumen if you have decided to join the Church. If you have past sins that are weighing on you, you can talk to a priest about that and ask his advice.

Hi,

I would think, that if you truely believe that the Catholic Church is the true Church and it is the Body of Christ, the Church that Christ started.

Then you would be obligated to become a member.

Bill;)

Thanks all for the advice - I have every intention of committing to an RCIA in due course. I’m just looking forward to actually getting to a mass over Easter atm. I had wondered if just being a protestant was a mortal sin in and of itself. 🙂 Thank you, and do say a little prayer for me

You are, at the moment, what the Church calls a “material heretic,” which is not as bad as it sounds. 🙂 All it means is that you are separated from being fully united with the Church because you are not in communion with the Church. You are not a “formal heretic” which is one who knows the Church is the true Church but refuses to believe its teachings or be in communion with her. As it stands now you are not guilty of mortal sin since you don’t have the intention of knowingly and willingly rebelling against the Church.

Once you start RCIA you will be a candidate and so will no longer be considered a Protestant. Until then you are free to attend and participate in any of the Church’s liturgies, although you may not receive the Eucharist. You can cross yourself with holy water and genuflect to the tabernacle, you can go to adoration and pray the rosary. You can learn all you can about the Church as you are able and so on…

Welcome to the discernment process. Have no fears. God knows your heart and your desire. If you are already baptized, then you are a Christian and so belong to Christ. If not, your desire for baptism would serve as the sacrament if you should die before being baptized. God bless you, you have my prayers.

You may or may not be, just as any given Catholic may or may not be.

Outside the ordinary means of having your sins forgiven (sacramental confession), a perfect act of contrition (true sorrow for sins for love of God, not just for fear of hell) puts you in a state of grace. But if you are convinced the Catholic Church is the one true Church you must join her in order to be saved.

God’s blessings to you!
