My non-Catholic mom gave me some anointing oil. What should I do with it?

Where did she get it? From a priest?

If not, dont’ do anything with it, Thank her and be gracious but it has not been properly blessed an is simply oil.

I thought only the bishop blesses oil?
Count me ignorant on that one. But the point remains the same and it certainly would be worth checking with the Diocese if personal oil can be used and properly blessed. If not, maybe use the oil at the same time with blessed oil so as to remember this person’s mother in prayer at the same time.

You’re thinking of the oils of catechumens, sick, and holy chrism. Just blessed oil can be blessed by a priest.

What kind of oil is it? Just because a bottle or packet says “anointing oil,” that doesn’t mean it is. If she got it for you with the best of intentions, be gracious but don’t do anything with it until you find out what kind of oil it really is.

What do you mean by ‘kind’ of oil; canola, olive? If it is not intended as anointing (for sick etc) then what else could it be?

Not every oil is an anointing oil. For instance, vegetable oil is used for cooking not anointing. Chrism is made of olive oil and a sweet perfume, usually balsam.

From what I gather, liturgical Protestants (Lutheran, Presbyterian, Anglican, and Methodist ) have a rite for the use of anointing oil but view it as optional. They use olive oil.
