Protestant bible?

Hello everyone,

I have been reading a protestant bible since I converted to the christian faith about a year ago. I have been raised as a catholic and a couple of months ago I chose to be catholic (again). Now I am starting to wonder if it may be sinful to read a protestant bible instead of a catholic one. Or would it be inappropriate? I like this bible translation because it is close to the original text. In my country there is only one real catholic translation, but I find the cover of that bible childish and unprofessional. Could anyone give me some advise?

I like the Douay Rheims.

On another note…check your bible for Luke 1:28. If the translation refers to Mary as “highly favored one” or some other nicety instead of “full of grace”, I would look for another translation.

No, the Catholic Church isnt legalist is it?Read WHATEVER you want to.
 
No…it is not sinful to read a Protestant bible. It is the Word of God. But You need to have a Catholic Bible because the Protestant bible is missing 7 books of the Old Testament and part of Esther and Daniel.

The RSV Catholic Edition is a good translation and it is a translation that the Protestants also use…plus the missing books. You would like the St. Ignatius Study Bible of the New Testament. Such great commentaries to help you understand the Bible from the heart of the Church.
 
No…if John 1 says “the word was a god” it is a heretical bible.
 
It is not sinful to read a Protestant Bible. If you wish to read a good Catholic Bible, I recommend the RSV-2CE and Douay-Rheims: if you’re used to KJV, NASB, or NIV types of Bibles (or Protestant study Bibles, which tend to be conservative), the liberal historical-critical translation choices and especially annotations present in the NAB, NJB, ecumenical editions of the NRSV by Oxford, etc. may be quite scandalous.

Now, as the poster below me said, the New World Translation is incredibly dishonest and corrupt anywhere it conflicts with Watchtowerist anti-Trinitarian (and anti-Christian) doctrine. It’s a Bible to be avoided at all costs like few others.

When I speak of “Protestant translations” I think of the mainstream evangelical ones, like, above, the KJV, New KJV, NASB, ESV, and NIV.

If the protestant bible includes all 73 books of the canon rather than just 66 books then it ought to be fine.

If you do not like the cover on the Catholic bible then get a book cover for it - a leather one, for example, and use the Catholic bible 🙂

PS: Avoid the bible from Jehovah’s witnesses, it is corrupt.
 
The Protestants took some books of the Old Testament out, such as the two Books of Maccabees. So if you have a Protestant Bible, it is only some of the Bible. The footnotes of a Protestant Bible could also promote ideas contrary to the Catholic faith. I don’t know about Dutch Bibles, but some Protestant versions have actually altered the Bible to suit their own beliefs, though this may not be the case when it comes to the main Protestant versions in your country.
For myself, if my only objection to an otherwise good edition of the Bible that is Catholic was the front cover, I would cover over the front cover with something else by glueing it on or laminating it on, perhaps using a picture of Jesus, the Pope or Mary, or even take it to a book binder to have it rebound.
I don’t think it sinful to use a Protestant-produced Bible, unless the perhaps rather remote possibility occurred that the footnotes would trouble your faith.

Do you realize that the Protestant bibles removed books from the canon at the time of Reformation?? Many Protestants will tell you the Catholic Church has changed the bible. Nothing could be further from the truth. The truth is the exact opposite! Not only did Luther remove about 7 books of the Old Testament , he wanted to remove even more, including books in the New Testament, namely James and Hebrews I believe, but his supporters urged him not to go that far. He removed these books for a number of reasons some of which have some logic and make some sense. However, these issues were decided over a thousand years before him in Church Councils. Then at the time of the Reformation he finds it theologically expedient to remove these books. So why would you want to read a bible that has been altered from the book which was divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit?? While I dont think that for the most part you would be lead straight to hell for reading it, why not stay with the real bible?? Its also just a farce when you hear someone tell you that the Catholic Church altered the bible!

I agree with the above post - if you can’t get this version, I suggest the Douai-Reims, rather than The New American or Jerusalem. But you might be looking for something else besides English. If there’s a faithful modern translation - check out Isaiah 7:14 for instance - go with it. But if not, consider a pre-Vatican II translation in your chosen language.

The best preparation for reading the Bible is prayer!

But seriously could you not put a cover on the Catholic bible since that seems to be the only part you don’t like?

The Protestant bible has discarded about 1/3 of the Old Testament.

I think the DR is only available in English. And the one you are speaking to is fluent in Nederlanders.
 
The only difference between the Catholic Bible and the Protestant Bible is a few books. Instead of buying a Catholic bible, you can simply purchase a book that contains the extra books that the Catholic Bible contains. These books care called the Apocrypha, or the Deuterocanonical Books. That way you can still enjoy your Protestant bible and also read the other Catholic books as well.

TECHNICALLY there is nothing in the Protestant Bible, so far as I’m aware, that
cannot be found in the Catholic Bible, BUT the Protestants kinda butchered the
Bible, taking books out, and that is the real problem.

Luther’s 1534 translation included not only all 73 of the books typically found in the western Bible (Orthodox Bibles have more), but also The Prayer of Manasseh. Please site a specific source where Luther claims he wanted to remove the Antilegomena of the NT.
I have heard this charge often, but have yet to see a source to document it.
