You would like the St. Ignatius Study Bible of the New Testament. Such great commentaries to help you understand the Bible from the heart of the Church.

Itā€™s a shame they donā€™t do an equivalent Old Testament version.

As far as Protestant Bibles go, I like the NIV, but the RSVCE is my favourite.

Hi Jon,

Why do you recommend a Catholic bible with 73 books and not an Orthodox bible with up to 81?

How do you know whoā€™s right? šŸ˜›
The poster is becoming Carholic. Hence, a 73 book recommendation.
Were the poster becoming Orthodox, I would have recommended accordingly.

So my recommendation was directly related to the communion.

One major difference being there being extant only one version, in Amharic, of the Ethiopic Broad Canon, which is accepted as authentic by no other church - not even other monophysite churches.

What happened to Kahlleson the OP of this thread? I think that perhaps I was the only one who responded appropriately to him. He is a Nederlander and probably not too interested in English translations.

I even have a copy of the Divine Liturgy in Dutch. He is not an American.

Hello everyone,

I have been reading a protestant bible since I converted to the christian faith about a year ago. I have been raised as a catholic and a couple of months ago I chose to be catholic (again). Now I am starting to wonder if it may be sinful to read a protestant bible instead of a catholic one. Or would it be inappropriate? I like this bible translation because it is close to the original text. In my country there is only one real catholic translation, but I find the cover of that bible childish and unprofessional. Could anyone give me some advise?

Thank you,
I think the best bible for you if the Catholic Study Bible second edition.

Nor am I, but he posted in English on an Anglophone forum (at least Iā€™ve never seen the other language parts of it if there are any), so I (and I assume the rest of the posters) assumed he was looking for something in English! (Especially when he says that in his country , there is only one ā€œreal Catholic translationā€, gives me the idea heā€™s looking for something outside of his country.)

Question: How do you know the Catholic list of books in the Bible is right?
My answer: The First Vatican Council, an ecumenical council, said that according to the faith of the Church, as earlier declared by the Council of Trent, the books of the Bible that should be accepted are the 73 ones which now appear in it. You had asked how others can know there are 73 books, so I am simply stating my own conviction, based on an ecumenical council of the Church. According to Catholic belief, the decrees of an ecumenical council are infallibleā€“and you may have noticed how Vatican II is frequently quoted by Catholics.
I greatly admire the Orthodox and would not say anything against them. Still, if there or two completely different views, only one of them can be right, wouldnā€™t you think?

The question of what is, and is not, an ecumenical council is often an issue, too.
