IEC 2012: Opening Ceremony and Mass - June 10, 2012

And sensible people, from St Paul onward, realized that you don’t get results by beating them over the head with your truth.

Let’s start with how he preached to the Athenians. Did he stand in the marketplace and say ‘I am right, you are wrong, your priests are no priests, your gods are demons. Tear down your temples and altars and cease your blasphemous sacrifices’?

No. He learned about their faith, which implies gentle inquiry rather than belligerent grandstanding, even went into their temples and observed who, what and how they worshipped.

Then he starts something like ‘men of Athens, I can see that you fear God and are devout’ Praising what he can, being silent about what he can’t. Building on what he shares with them - ‘I see that you worship the Unknown God. That is my God, the one true God.’

As I said, no real hint of condemnation or that they are less-than. He does say they do not know what they worship, but is not harsh or condemning of their imperfect knowledge.

I’m not sure where anyone advocated for that. I’m simply laying out the whole point of ecumenism in the first place so that we’re all on the same page. The way I read many people’s responses, you’d think ecumenism is permission to have a multi-religion social club where we go to gloat over each other and pat each other on the back, assuring each other of how wonderful we all are.

Ecumenism has been deformed by generally well-meaning people who nevertheless look past the objective and who turned it into a feel-good party time attaboy sort of thing, I think. My point is that ecumenism is not a goal in itself. It is the means to attain the goal of conversion, nothing more, nothing less. We must do it in charity, but we must not allow giggley butterflies in our stomachs to eclipse our goal. In fact, hardcore evangelization/ecumenism and charity go hand in hand, I’d say.

I watched 2:49 and several minutes after, saw some parading around with water but not the blessing of it.

In any event, are you familiar with antidoron? In Eastern liturgies, Eucharistic bread is blessed and distributed, there is also blessed and distributed shortly after some DLs antidoron - bread which is NOT the Eucharist and which all attendees, even myself as a Catholic at an Orthodox DL, may receive. I was certainly confused by this practice until it was explained to me.

So, to sum up, not all priestly blessings are equal. Not all priestly blessings even of bread are equal. Sometimes a priest simply blesses his sandwich at lunch like I do. Is it not at least possible that this water was not blessed as Holy water in the same way as the stuff the bishop puts in his fonts?

I watched it all the way to 3:18 and have to admit I am confused of why he blessed the water and then the people. Maybe someone else has an explanation.

Let’s recap: Someone might have blessed water and ecclesiastical colleagues from different Christian churches pray to God together in charity and fraternity and peace at the behest of the Pope, and it becomes an occasion of angst. 🤷

I know 😦

On review, I was not clear  – The Water thing begins at 2 hours and 49 ish min.

I am very sorry for the confusion

There is nothing wrong at all with witnessing to non-Catholics the truth found in the Catholic church. Yes, we must love and we have common ground to start on but with all the love we can, true ecumenism is to bring people into the Catholic church.
I guess the question is whether one is prudent and wants to win hearts, or if one is prideful and wants to win arguments.

OH - the vested Bishop did make the sign of the Cross over the water - of that there is no doubt.

But the water was sprinkled over the people attending by various clergy - did you spot Metropolitan Hilarion ?, how about the leading Methodist minister ?

I’m sorry, I don’t see where anyone is getting anxious or fearful as that is what angst means. The OP saw something and had a question. That’s all. He came to his fellow Catholics to ask, probably because he didn’t know the answer himself as I would not have know the answer either if someone came to me and asked me a question regarding Anglicans blessing water. So we have a learning experience. 🙂

That is true. We must be very prudent and do our best to be about bringing hearts home to the Catholic church. It is definitely not about winning arguments because that doesn’t help souls.

we have a palm sunday mini service with several surrouding churches. the anglican minister blesses the whole crowd with holy water from my church.
