Protestant Catholic agreement

I thought it might be interesting to start a thread discussion what agreement Protestants and Catholics have regarding scriptural issues, for a change.

The first thing I can think of is the canon of the NT.

Jesus is the Son of God who became man, born of a virgin, was crucified, died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven.

I think we all agree on this!

The first thing I can think of is the canon of the NT.

Protestants have many things in common with Catholics. I found that I didn’t have to change my Protestant beliefs as I turned Catholic; only add some new insights.

For starters, Protestants and Catholics agree about:

• The Lord our God is One.
• He is a triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
• Jesus is the Son of God
• Salvation comes thru no other than Jesus.
• If we confess our sin, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins.
• Most Protestants believe in water baptism in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
• We are not accountable for our sins before an “age of reason”.
• We are born with original sin. (Some exceptions noted)
• Salvation is a gift from God that we receive through faith.
• Prayer
• Charity
• Two commandments: Love God, Love man.
• Jesus chose twelve disciples. One betrayed Him.
• Peter repented.
• Paul was sent out to bring the gospel to the Gentiles.
• John the Baptist came before Jesus to announce His coming.
• The Apostles Creed.

I am a former Southern Baptist, and I still have many of the same beliefs as a Catholic.

The Trinity
Virgin Birth
Resurrection
Bible infallability
The need for a Savior
The need for repentance
The need for faith
Abortion is wrong

Is that a universal Baptist belief? If so, that’s awesome. I know that from my Presbyterian upbringing, they took the “we think abortion is a terrible thing, but we wouldn’t presume to tell a woman what to do with her body” line.

Although the pro-life cause isn’t one all Protestants agree with Catholics on, I can add another one on the list- eternal life. Now, where it’s spent and how one winds up where is up for debate among religious lines, but we can all agree that we were created with both physical AND spiritual natures, and we will have eternal life.

No, it is not a universal belief among Baptists, nor among Southern Baptists. There are many different Baptist denominations, you have some more conservative and liberal, while Southern Baptists have become more liberal over time as many have compromised alot of principles in order to “grow churches.” I’d say the Independent Baptists are the most consistant and grounded about their beliefs, but usually lack tolerance toward other Christians who do not agree with everything they believe, especially about the King James Version.

But when I listed some of the “agreements,” I had my own past religious convictions and beliefs in mind as a Southern Baptist. I used to preach and teach, and I held most of what the Southern Baptist Convention believed. But I sure rubbed some people the wrong way at times! It happens with Catholics too, but at least now I can not be accused of pushing my own opinion but simply following exactly what the Church of Jesus Christ says, the Catholic Church.
