Protestant child received communion

As a child (non-Catholic) I went to church one Sunday and and received communion with everyone else. They didn’t know I was not Catholic. At the time, I didn’t know what Holy Communion was, much less the rules under which we consume Him.

Illicit?
unworthy?
 
When I was in 10th grade, I went to my first ever Catholic Mass with my best friend at the time, a Catholic.

He told me I could partake of holy communion with him provided that I believed it was truly the body and blood of Christ (real presence). I told him I was good with that and so I went and took it with him (on tongue while kneeling) by following everything he did.

I come from a faith tradition where all professing Christians are welcome to take communion, so I wasn’t aware of any prohibitions at the time.

Was I culpable?

No, you got wrong info from your friend. Who may have been poorly catechized or misunderstood something he was taught.
You are not culpable.

Once you knew the Church didn’t allow you to receive, if you’d gone anyway, that would be disrespectful and you would be culpable.
 
So nice these days to hear people give kind, reasonable answers and responses to questions. This whole thread is full of them. If only we had more of this approach across the board with the problems of the day. Something to pray for I guess…

(I need to do a better job myself now that I think about it. Got a little off the rails in one of the “political” forums…) 😦

👍. I didn’t attend Mass again after that time for at least five years, and by then I had become aware of the rules and didn’t go up to receive anymore since that time.

When I was a child and long before I became Catholic, I received communion at a Funeral Mass. I had no idea at the time. It was a mistake, and that’s it. No big deal.

In these cases those receiving communion are quite excusable.
