Hello all,

I read a while back about the conversion story of a prominent Protestant clergyman converting to the Catholic faith during the early years of the United States. Does anyone have further information?

Hello all,

Can you give any more info? When you say “early years of the United States”, what years are you referring to?

Well I can’t really say. I know that a book has been written on him. I saw it on this forum some months ago but I can’t find it. All I can tell you is that it was the late 18th century. He was a minister or held some position in the Church of England and then made his conversion to Catholicism.

Here are 2 possibilities.
  1. Fr. Virgil Horace Barber
Episcopal minister in charge of an academy.
  1. Dr. Levi Silliman Ives
An Episcopal bishop.

Hope this helps.

Ah yes! It was Ives and his book “The Trials of a Mind in its Progress to Catholicism”
