Our first child will be born any day now. We live in the buckle of the Bible Belt, and while we have found a great, traditional Catholic parish with a school that we plan on sending our children to, there are no Catholic day cares in the area. The school starts at pre-K, and offers before and after-school care, which means that we will only need to have our son in day care until he is approximately four years old. For the past six months we have been researching, visiting, examining and interviewing all the day cares in the area. The secular ones are downright awful, so we have narrowed our choices down to two Protestant day cares, both of which have excellent reputations and are clean, well-staffed and convenient to us.
My first choice is at a Presbyterian church. This is in an upscale section of town, and is generally considered the best in the area. Unfortunately this means that there is a long waiting list here, so we may not get in.
The only other option for us is at an academy run by Free Will Baptists. While both day cares were great about answering any questions we had, the Free Will Baptist day care added the extra step of interviewing US. I would generally be okay with that, except for the reaction I received when, after being asked where we go to church, we replied that we are Catholic and go to Mass weekly. The principal actually paused, looked us up and down, and then stated that we should go to their church instead. The rest of the conversation shifted from talking about the day care, to trying to convince us to leave the Church and start going there.
I have been told by others that I am making too big a deal over this, but I am quite literally horrified at the prospect of sending my son into that environment. I know that nobody is going to try to proselytize a baby or a toddler, but it seems to me these people must have a pretty low opinion of Catholics. Or is it possible that they would have tried to convince us to go to their church regardless of what religion we currently were? Is that just the way these places work?
If anyone has any experience with this sort of thing, I would love to get your thoughts.
