I am a North American of Eastern European and Italian background. But I celebrate the true Easter . . .Interesting. I thought you were one of us North Americans who celebrated Easter 3 days ago.

Thatâs cool.I am a North American of Eastern European and Italian background. But I celebrate the true Easter . . .

Oh, that Martin Luther. Always saying the craziest of thingsMartin Luther once debated an RC theologian. When Luther heard him cast an aspersion on the Orthodox Church, he spoke in defence of the Eastern Church to remind his RC opponent that the Eastern Church was one-half of the universal Church and that he considered the Eastern Church, by far, the âbetter half.â
Protestants arenât all bad . . .
Alex
Oh, the irony of that statement.Youâve perhaps heard about the Catholic who, while giving a speech at Calvin College, said âAnyone who believes in total depravity canât be all bad.â
Because, according to the canons of Nicea (the first, I believe), Easter is should take place after Passover, not before.Um⌠how can the âtrueâ Easter be on May 5th when Passover began on April 6th?![]()
In the UGCC, we call it the âPolish Easter.âThatâs cool.
My parish, and all other EC parishes I have been too AFAIK, celebrate the Latin Easter date.
Please - weâre the âbetter halfâ of Christendom.Oh, that Martin Luther. Always saying the craziest of things
Protestants arenât all bad, eh? You Eastern Catholics arenât half bad yourselves![]()
That is absolutely correct - Easter must always take place after Passover. This year, the West came close to celebrating Easter like Quartodeciman schismatics!Because, according to the canons of Nicea (the first, I believe), Easter is should take place after Passover, not before.
Whose Easter is on May 5th? The old Celtic one perhaps?Um⌠how can the âtrueâ Easter be on May 5th when Passover began on April 6th?![]()
Protestants arenât all bad, eh? You Eastern Catholics arenât half bad yourselves![]()
Better maybe, but not half. Only a very small percentage of Christians are EC.
âThe better half of Christendomâ, eh? Humility is a sign of saintliness, you knowPlease - weâre the âbetter halfâ of Christendom.
Dr Luther said so, you know . . .
Alex
I think Dr Martin Luther was referring to the entire Orthodox East. âUniatismâ wasnât on the horizon in Europe just yet . . .
Better maybe, but not half. Only a very small percentage of Christians are EC.
Iâve heard RC priests quote them during their sermons, at one point referring to âBrother Martin of Querfurt.ââThe better half of Christendomâ, eh? Humility is a sign of saintliness, you know
Dr. Luther also had many other wonderful statements, none of which I shall reproduce here![]()
Indeed. Such changes are astounding. But, we are getting off-topic. Goodness, gracious, perhaps us two should start a thread somewhere about Eastern Christianity and Lutherans. We have more in common than one would think!Iâve heard RC priests quote them during their sermons, at one point referring to âBrother Martin of Querfurt.â
The Catholic-Lutheran âDie Sammlungâ movement has produced a wonderful perspective on the basic Catholic vision of Br. Martin.

My Baptist theology professor of Protestant thought at my Jesuit college explained that the term comes from Lutherâs, âWe will protest our faith,â a usage far closer to âprofessâ in modern English than âprotest.âRemember of course that the protestants were âprotestingâ against Rome.
When protestant say âRoman Catholic Churchâ theyâre talking about it in a whole to include the Eastern branches (at least the educated ones do anywayProtestants like to identify the Catholic Church as the Roman Catholic Church, but are they not familiar with the Eastern rites of the Church? To eastern Catholics does this offend you that you are being so called left out because they call the whole church " Roman "? Is there anyway we can introduce the eastern rites to the western culture of Christianity, because as a Latin rite Iâm sick of people not knowing the other lung of the Church.
God bless
According to Merriam-Webster âRoman Catholicâ was first used in 1581. What happened that year? When protestant say âRoman Catholic Churchâ theyâre talking about it in a whole to include the Eastern branches (at least the educated ones do anyway).
We say Roman because we tend to consider âAnglicanâ reformed Catholic, we know thereâs a separate Polish National Catholic Church.
Thereâs other âCatholicâ Churches we have to refer to you know.
