Protestant family attending 1st Holy Communion. Need advice

Our daughter is doing her First Holy Communion on May 5th. Many of my husband’s Protestant family will be there to support our daughter, thanks be to God. However, It is May Crowning of Our Lady and our daughter will be crowning Mary. How do I explain to them simply what is going on and why. I’m afraid all they’re going to focus on is that we are crowning some statue & we are indeed statue worshipers, lol. Ok, they may not think we are statue worshipers but they will find it very odd & uncomfortable. Any advice?

Remind them first of the Scripture, “all generations will call me blessed.” (Luke 1:48) As Catholics, we take that prophesy literally.

Similarly, as Solomon enthroned his mother (1 Kings 2:19), we see the mother of Jesus as enthroned.

The crowning is one way we participate in honoring her. We honor her in our hearts. However, as we are not only spirit, we also have a need to honor her in our bodies. Since her body is in Heaven, we need a proxy to stand in for her.

The statue is that proxy for the mother of Jesus, our King.
 
Tell them the truth - the May Crowning is an annual tradition in the Catholic Church whereby we symbolically acknowledge that because Mary is the mother of the King of Kings, she is the Queen of Heaven. It’s a ceremony that is meant to foster love and devotion to Mary especially in the young people, but it is not an act of worship. Catholics only worship God, and we know that because Catholics only offer sacrifice to God.
 
My daughter had a beautiful First Holy Communion and the family dinner was lovely. Nobody had any questions nor complaints nor opinions. But had there been, we were completely prepared. Thank you everyone for your responses.
