Yes, a celebration of the life - a memorial. For some more Evangelical preachers, it is a chance to give a good sermon and altar call (Brother Jones went was ready, are you ready? type sermon).

Not for all Protestant denoms. The apostolic and liturgical ones, such as High Anglican, believe in praying for the repose of the soul of the departed for whom the service is being offered.

However, for those denoms and sects on the Evangelical side of Christianity, it is just a memorial, a gathering of family and church congregation, and an opportunity for the minister to say whatever he pleases from eulogizing the dead to giving a hellfire sermon–it’s up to him/her and the family.

Nah, they are to pay respects for the dead, to celebrate their life, and their salvation in Christ Jesus. To give the family closure with the loss of a loved one, and hopefully bring everyone closer with the realization on their own mortality. Basically take every reason that a Catholic would have a service, and subtract “pray for them”.
