Yes, but I also bump up against wanting to do things just for myself. I’m still tempted to sin. I’m still capable of sin. I still sin.
Oh I sin too, believe me!!! We must try and acknowledge our sins before God as soon as possible and ask for his forgiveness so that we might get back on the path to Heaven. 😃
Kay Cee:
Would you also agree it goes beyond listening? Would you agree we can choose to obey God or not obey Him?
Absolutely!!! 👍
Kay Cee:
Perhaps it would help if at this point we define “works.” I think we both agree that only works done for the glory of God have any merit, and that even so, these works cannot earn salvation. (Then again, neither can faith earn salvation, since salvation cannot be earned. We cannot obligate God.)

I would define good works as any action done for the glory of God. This includes loving Him and loving our neighbor.
Agreed, as loving God and your neighbor is instructed of us in the scriptures! 👍
Kay Cee:
We agreed earlier there is a faith that does not save and a faith that does save. Therefore it follows that a faith that does save is different from a faith that does not save. A faith that does save has something more to it than a faith that does not. Exactly what is this something? (Please note–I’m talking about the faith of those who are capable of doing good works, not those in a state wherein they are incapable.)
A faith that saves is true and not something forced. A faith that does NOT save is a false faith had for whatever reason, like pleasing relatives and just for show.
A faith that saves is almost always accompanied by works, as a true faith should be. 😃
Kay Cee:
Thank you! I hope so too. I probably get far too nervous and worry too much about such things.
She’ll do fine. God is watching over her. 👍
Sorry I had to rush my response but I’m late in getting dinner ready. lol :o

I’m assuming you mean the only time there would be an excuse for not doing good works would be in exceptional circumstances, like we discussed.

Okay. Then would you define faith as something that (under ordinary circumstances) must include works, especially the work of loving God and our neighbor?

The reason I keep asking is because I’ve seen “faith alone, but a faith that is not alone” which would seem to violate the law of non-contradiction. But if faith is defined as something like “a belief, trust, and acceptance of Jesus as our Lord and Savior and obedience to Him through good works” then that would agree with the Catholic position that both faith (belief, trust, and acceptance of Jesus as our Lord and Savior) and works (obedience to Him through good works) are necessary. (Works here again defined as those done for the glory of God, not for our own benefit.)

So, if you say “faith alone” but by that you includes works, it would mean the same thing as when Catholics say “faith + works.” In which case, we would agree!

Oh, I know she’ll most likely be okay, but I can’t help worrying. I’m a worrier. They’re not sure they can save that one eye tooth that’s a problem. This isn’t anywhere near as bad as when my other daughter needed major surgery–a five hour operation!

Thank you for your prayers. I may be back tomorrow afterwards if all goes well.

I’m hesitant to say this but I’m gonna agree with you here. 😃

The whole doctrine of sola fide is true but not exclusive, just like the ever-popular argument over sola scriptura. Our faith will save us, but only if we live our faith to the fullest (e.g. loving God and our neighbor, as it is commanded of us in scripture). Sola scriptura (I know, I’m drifting off topic) is viewed as an infallible source of God’s Word but it’s not the ONLY source we turn to. We believe that the scriptures are the foundation of faith and contain all the Truth we need to know but we know and accept the fact that there are OTHER teachings that weren’t written down. 👍 Those teachings aren’t necessary for salvation but can help us on our journey to Heaven. 🙂

Okay, it looks like we pretty much agree about faith and works. Sola scriptura is a whole 'nother topic for a whole 'nother thread, and I might be willing to begin a thread and discuss it, but there are already numerous threads about it, and frankly, now is not a good time for me. Maybe later.
Let me know how it goes. 😉
Oh, I will! I should mention I’m lucky her grandma is coming over to babysit while I pick up my older daughter from school tomorrow. My younger one is a teen and old enough to be home alone, but not in that condition–especially after having an anesthesia. I figure she’ll probably sleep all day–I did after I had my wisdom teeth out. Thank goodness there’s no school Monday so she has more time to recover.

I know and apologize for drifting off topic but it goes side by side with faith and how we can develop our faith. 🙂

The extra day to recoop will definitely be good for her. 👍 Have a nice weekend! 😃

No apology necessary!

I thought I’d pop in here before I take her to her surgery.

We got up this morning, and wouldn’t you know–it’s snowing! That may not be a big deal elsewhere, but it almost never snows in southern California. at least not at this altitude. And wouldn’t you know–she’s supposed to show up for the surgery in short sleeves.

Anyway, she’s sitting on the kitchen floor watching the snow. She’s actually never seen snow come down before, and she’s 13!

Here in the Midwest snow is an every winter occurance. 😛 In fact, our neighbors to the west are in for a big winter storm this weekend. I’m hoping it doesn’t make it here.
Let me know how your daughter does after the surgery. 🙂

Just a quick note to let everyone know the surgery went well. At least that’s what the doctor said, and he had a big grin on his face–so I’m hoping that means he was quite satisfied with his work!

She’s pretty miserable, of course, but fortunately she’s mostly sleeping.

Thanks to all for their prayers and support.

Hi,
Im so glad to hear that:thumbsup: If they put a link on her one tooth to pull it down, tell her it doesnt hurt that much. The first might be bad but after that it really doesnt hurt when they pull on it.👍 Have a great weekend!!

Excellent news! Sleep is probably the best thing for her. 👍

Just a quick note to say another big thank you to all who prayed for my daughter.

She’s doing fine and back at school this morning. I’m sure she healed so quickly partly because of her young age, but I’m also sure she healed quickly because of all the prayer.

Thanks!

We’ll say it’s a combination of both. 😃
