Catholics are always getting accused of idolatry with our devotions to the Blessed Virgin and the saints. However I was reading a book that belongs to my Protestant brother, and it elevated the Bible to the status of God. I understand that the Bible is God’s written Word, but the Bible does not “know what we need in our hearts” (It actually said that–I am NOT making this up!) That is idolatry, my friends! That author, at least, replaced God with a book! Very sad…

Yes, it is sad how Bible adoration is flourishing among some brethern.

book worship is a bad habit, isnt that like the first commandment?

Isn’t that what Sola Scriptura is all about? When we take scripture and place at such an elevated level that we don’t need anything else. Scripture alone then replaces things like Church–service/mass, the Pope, and even Christ Himself. When you say “Scripture alone” you rule out all authority of tradition, which means denying the very church that gave us the Scriptures. I am not saying that scripture is not important or the word of God. What I am saying is that we are to worship God through Christ–not His word alone. (Make sense? If not, sorry, I’m sick.)

So… what was the name of your brother’s book again? Oh, that’s right, you failed to give that crucial detail.
Therefore, anyone who might (you know) have an inclination to do some actual research would be left without a reference.
Thanks, dude.
Way to make an argument.

Sarcasm aside, that was not the point of the OP. The point was the God was replaced by a book.

The book is like, I dunno, 150 miles away…read part of it over the weekend, and silly me, I don’t have photographic memory. Do you doubt that this type of idolatry exists among some Protestants? Next time I make the trek home, I will get the title of the book, but this view is fairly common among Fundamentalists. As far as research…well I do have real reasearch to do, and it has nothing to do with a silly internet forum.

The problem with Sola Scriptura is that most of the time the phrases “Word of God” and “Word of the Lord” are used in Scriptures, they are in reference to something besides Scripture.

It would be very valuable to this thread to know the name of the book you are referring to in your post. Is it possible to make a simple phone call to ask your brother the name of the book in question. I have never heard anyone of any denomination refer to the Bible as God or in place of God. The sad thing here is that without the title of the book, this thread will continue without ALL the necessary information required to give an opinion on this topic. That is how rumors can potentially get started.
I will tell you that the Jews have a great deal of respect for the Torah and the Muslims for the Qur’an.Protestants have a great deal of respect for the Bible as do the Roman Catholics.I guess when you consider they contain the word of God they deserve respect.God Bless. NLM

sola scripture lacks discerment and ignores the bible itself john 21:25 but there are also many other things that jesus did if everyone of them were written down i sppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

There is actually a term for this: bibliolatry – making an idol out of the bible.

I’m not making fun of you, but is that really a word? Where did you get it?

Source and context? Or does that not matter around here?

It’s an observation I believe, does it totally fit? I guess I can’t say, certainly not as a blanket statement. But let me put it to you this way, if you were to ignore the spoken word of God, mearly because it’s not written in a book (no matter how inspired), then I would suggest this fits very neatly.

No matter the form, the word of God can never be ignored.

I’ll get the title of the book and I will reproduce the entire paragraph–so that it will be plain that this is indeed a case of idolatry. Like I said, it isn’t even my book, though there was a time in my life that I would have agreed with it, but that was before I found the Truth of the Catholic Church.

That would help the level of discourse. Perhaps that is the case and sometimes the context has been established in a previous section. Depending on the literary style of the author, it is really hard to tell without context. On the otherhand, I think idolatry when it concerns the written words of God would be hard to establish.
However, perhaps you have found such an example and it can be a warning to overzealous behavior.

Or it can be evidence to the facts: Fundamentalism is heresy.
