What role can a Protestant minister play in the Catholic Wedding ceremony? my girlfriend is an Evangelical Christian and I obviously have to get married in the Catholic Church but want her uncle who is a Pastor to take a significant part in the ceremony. I’m looking for info on this if anyone can help. Thanks

As far as a significant part is conderned I am not sure he can have one. I think all a protestant minister could do in a Catholic ceremony is give the homily, but I am not sure about this.

You can have your marriage blessed in the church and have the ceremony in a protestant church. You will still have the classes and agree to raise your kids in the church, just the ceremony will be elsewhere. You may have to get a dispensation for this. Talk to your priest for specifics.

I’m not sure about the rules for this situation. I imagine her uncle could do such things as read the Scriptures, offer up the Prayers of the Faithful, and say a prayer/blessing over you and your fiancee. You’d have to speak with the priest about it though.

Talk to your Priest. It can be done. I married a non-Catholic Christian (who has since converted!:clapping: ) in my Church. His grandfather was a retired Baptist minister, and did have an active role. I cannot remember exactly what he did, but the whole ceremony was very beautiful and it meant a lot to my husband to have his grandfather involved, and me to have the blessing of the Church. Can’t remember the details (maybe I should break out the video), but it can be done.

Interesting…I wonder if he can say the part where we exchange vows and pronounce us man and wife.

NOPE!! I remember that part! But he did do alot. They both gave a “homily” and after we were pronounced man and wife ( I think it was after) and we were kneeling while the Priest was blessing us, we remained kneeling while his grandfather gave us his blessing also. Although not blessing in the same sense as the Priest. His was more like an “I wish you well”, but deeper. I really am going to have to dig out my video. I’ve left it buried becuse his grandfather was really old and during the ceremony he called me by the wrong name!!

No, the priest must do that in a Catholic ceremony. For our wedding, my wife’s pastor (at the time) read the Gospel and said some prayers, but the priest gave the homily and presided over the exchange of vows.
