A protestant is a person that wants to be called a Christian but doesn’t actually want to be a Christian. They are actually the enemies of Jesus. The OP can be non denominational and all that but they need to realize that this does in fact make them NOT a Christian and thus actually a Protestant.

The word Protestant is linked most closely to the people who left Christianity after the DEFORMATION. After the Deformation, they wanted to be refered to as Reformed Churches but that didn’t stick. The word Protestant did stick for a very good reason, they PROTESTED a religious freedom act.

That is right, the people that left Catholicism during the Deformation are religious bigots that believe in segregation, racism and killing Catholics on sight. All of these things were banned in the religous freedom act but the Protestants, who are not Christians, PROTESTED against it.

So yah; Mormons, Jehovah Witness, Seven day Advent (whose leader’s name adds up to 666 in Roman Numerals) and all people who want to be called Christians but don’t actually want to be Christain including the totally fake NON DENOMINATIONAL people are all Protestants and are not Christians.

Your comment is not just wrong, but hateful as well.

Did they not protest the religous freedom act? Did their leaders not teach the killing of Catholics on sight? I know for a fact that they did. There were not a reformation, they deformed the Christian Church and are now trying to hijack the name of Christian and through bad example and bad behavior taint its reputation with all who need to be converted. Protestants show up in a country and say “we are christians”. They then proceed to treat the locals terrible and introduce KJV idolotry into the local population. These people can not read the bible in English much less KJV. The instead worhip the book itself and not Jesus. The give the name of Christian a very bad reputation. Then the Catholics show up and say, “we are Christians” but the locals don’t want to hear it because they have had enough of Christianity and hate it from the bad example the protestants gave them.

Catholics are Christians.
Protestants are not. To be protestant and to be Christain are mutually exclusive.

That is simply not true
Here is what the CCC has to say about this.

838 "The Church knows that she is joined in many ways to the baptized who are honored by the name of Christian, but do not profess the Catholic faith in its entirety or have not preserved unity or communion under the successor of Peter."322 Those "who believe in Christ and have been properly baptized are put in a certain, although imperfect, communion with the Catholic Church."323 With the Orthodox Churches, this communion is so profound "that it lacks little to attain the fullness that would permit a common celebration of the Lord’s Eucharist."324

To believe overwise is contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Your quote actually proves my point and I am very happy you quoted it. It states clearly that to be a Christian is to be in communion, even if it is a very imperfect communion, with the Catholic Church. A protestant is a person that actively reject the Catholic Church and all that the Church teaches, including Jesus. I admit that perhaps there are some people who are mislabled as protestant that might actually be Christian but that is not the case with most of them. The basic definitions of protestant and Christian are mutually exclusive. A person can not in actuallity be both at the same time.

Charming post–insightful, carefully edited (I was particularly impressed by the misspelling of the word “Christain”) and thoughtful–obviously intended to elevate the level of discourse here.

All sarcasm aside, I have been both saddened and embarrassed by some of the offensive language used by my fundamentalist brethren to describe Roman Catholicism. (Although I tend to think that there’s a lot less of that than people on this board think–a lot of us are a lot more open to Catholicism than the comments on this board would indicate–we disagree with y’all on some issues, but agree on quite a lot, and respect the church for it’s uncompromising stance on many issues including abortion).

If tit for tat retaliation is in order, I suppose the highlighted post can be justified. However, it’s just as ignorant as the anti-catholic rantings that many on this board (quite reasonably) take offense at.

We are One in the Spirit,
We are One in the Lord,
And we pray that all unity
May one day be restored.

And they’ll know we are Christians,
By our love.

Polemics have no place in discussions of this type. Those Christians that are outside of the fullness of the Church are no less Christians. Their love for Christ is no less than that of a Catholic…if fact, based off of much that I have personally seen, they love the Lord with much greater fervor than many that claim the title Catholic.

It concerns me much less to debate what our separated brethren are called than to worry about the damage done by those that profess to be Catholic, but act, and support positions that are utterly contrary to those the Church teaches. (John Kerry and Ted Kennedy anyone?)

Why should I listen to you. You are obviously a cafeteria Catholic.

You are a Catholic, posting on a Catholic forum, and directly contradicting Catholic teaching. If that is not a cafeteria Catholic, I don’t know what is…

And what did I post that contradict Catholic teaching. If I am really in error then please let me know, I will submit to the Church but I can’t see as of now how I am wrong on this.

The Vatican II council states it clearly, Trent states it clearly, just about every council states it clearly going all the way, not to mention all of the encyclicals of the Popes. I know that there are a lot of wishy washy priest right now that want to take a laid back attitude about this but I am tired of heretics gunning down Catholic priest in the streets. I am tired of it seeming like I have to ask permission from an enemy of God to practice my faith fully. I am tired of vandalism to Catholic Churches and I am tired of protestants knocking on my door and telling me, my wife and my son that we are all going to HELL for being Catholic, and if not for being Catholic then for being NOT WHITE, and if not for being not white then for not being American enough, or for knowing more then one language.

By the way, English is my second language, but if you want to criticize my spelling of a language that is not spelled the way it is pronounced then perhaps I should start correcting everyone’s grammar, the usage here is terrible.

Just a note so everyone understands, when someone attacks your spelling or you manner, it usually means they can’t find anything wrong with your arguement but just want to attack.

It you want to take correct English, then let us talk about pronoun use, or nominative absolutes, or gerunds as the subject of a sentance.

Attacking spelling or grammar is ridiculous.

I mess up a lot because I’m responding to so many people and I don’t have the time to make my posts perfect.

Seeing as I am the OP I thought it would be prudent to answer this post, though - I don’t even know where to begin. Your hatred is amazing. How you can call yourself a christian and profess such ignorance and hatred is beyond me.

I am not going to stomp my feet, cry foul, or even report you because it doesn’t deserve that kind of reaction. What I will do is bow my head in prayer to our Most High God and ask that He softens your heart and releases you from those binds of hate that you have allowed Satan to chain you up with.

Do you want me to start a thread? I will ask the Catholics here if you are accurately reflecting the teachings of your denomination.

Since technically baptism makes us part of the Body of Christ
(which is also called the Catholic Church) people unknowingly are baptized into the Catholic Church (which is also called the Body of Christ)?

The Protestants “protest” the authority of said church.
Which means they “protest” said Body.
Which also means they “protest” their baptism into the Church which is the Body of Christ.
But they’re still Christian? How?

How could you profess to love Christ but not follow Him?

Luke 10:16
16"He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me."

Jesus is talking to the Apostles who are the first members of the Body.Which makes them the bishops of the Church.

(KEY WORDS: Body,Members,Church)

Is it because Protestants don’t know the truth, that gets them off the hook,so to speak? So if a Protestant knows or comes to know that Jesus did in fact build a church on Peter, and the Apostles and it grew into a “universal” church and then was called the Universal Church aka Catholic Church with an authroity still in place, and they still reject it can they still be called “Christian”?

Non-Denomination is a group that says they’re not part of a group.

Makes me think of someone who can’t pick a side.😃

I think I still prefer just plain ol’ Christian… 🙂
No offense, but what’s important is not what you prefer, but what is historically accurate.

You can’t simply wish historical reality away just because you don’t like the sound of a word.

Not thousands - a few hundred at most. In England and Wales & Ireland. In Scotland: one.

And a great many clergy conformed to the reformed English Church without being forced. Likewise in Scotland - no force was needed. In Ireland, there were about 250 martyrs altogether, laity included; in England, 600, laity included. Ireland was in the odd position of having relatively few martyrs, yet staying mainly Catholic. The variations in how religion changed or did not depended largely on the social arrangements in the country in question.

OTOH, there were appalling atrocities when Louis XIV tried to convert the Huguenots to Catholicism in 1685 by revoking the Edict of Nantes. There was a great deal of violence then, which far exceeded the worst cruelties of the reign of Elizabeth I. Not to mention the massacres of Huguenots in Paris & other French cities after August 24 1572. Thousands were killed. Compared to the sufferings of the Huguenots, the sufferings of Catholics don’t look very impressive. Catholic repression of Protestants has always been much harsher than repression by Protestants. The 50 Catholics martyred under Henry VIII from 1535 to 1544 are few compared to the French Protestants put to death in France for their faith at the same time.

Most of the losses to Catholicism happened as a result of various legal measures, not as a result of violence (apart from some vandalism; Christians in the Roman Empire had vandalised pre-Christian holy places & shrines, so it’s not as though their descendants could complain).

I do wish people would not confuse Britain and England - they were not & are not the same. It would be rather like calling all North Americans Canadians 🙂 ##
Well I’m French and Protestant, we know about all this because we learn it at school in History, but it doesn’t affect the PRESENT relationship between Catholics and Protestants in France, which is usually good …:hug3:

not long ago I read some statistics that showed that in France there are more mixed Protestant-Catholic couples than … Protestant-Protestant couples … ( which can be easily explained by the fact that we ( Protestants ) represent about 2% of the population, and Catholics … about 80% … well well well if our Catholic compatriots decide to look after us, each one of us will have … 40 “babysitters”, great !!! )

In France the term Protestant is not pejorative and has two meanings : the one mentioned by several posters ( to protest against something ) but it is also derived from pro-testare, pro-testant being somebody who testifies , witnesses to his faith, proclaims his faith ( “testant” ) in front of ( “pro” ) someone, so it is rather positive …
