Help me on this one.

K-Love radio plans to bring their station to Cork, Ireland. In their radio promos they speak of having the joy of bringing the Gospel message to Ireland, to people who really need to hear that message.

K-Love (see link below) is a Protestant radio station and sets its voice to a modern mega-Church like level.

Ireland was won for Christ by St. Patrick, remains a heavily Catholic nation and as Catholics we well know of St. Patrick and of our Lady of Knock, ST. Joseph and ST. John at Knock, Ireland.

It seems to me there are an awful lot places in the world where Christianity is not thriving, yet K-Love has chosen a historically Catholic nation to make their first step into Europe.

Does this bother you?

After the sheer hatred spread by some protestant church ministers in Northern Ireland i would think this is a positive development. Maybe they are trying to reach out and find common ground with catholics !!! If they are a con then they will soon fade …give them a chance in the interim , there is nothing to fear !👍 😃 😃 😃

It is NOT about fear (having concerns does not equate to fear). The station is strongly Protestant, and for the life of me I cannot see why they would see Ireland as a mission field.

The Catholic Church is in decline in Ireland. Somehow with the prosperity of recent years has come less interest in the Church. The number of Protestants (particularly Evangelicals) has also gone up so the station may simply see an audience possibility there. Ireland is also getting immigrants in (Gods be praised–did you ever thing people would be immigrating TO Ireland?) some of whom aren’t Catholic.

None of that is good news. Nor is the station seeing a mission field there.

Ireland happens to be the fastest growing country in Europe, so this does not surprise me.

Tom Ireland is pretty much the same as here right now they have the evangelicals and the fundies just like we do. I come from Scotland, that Radio Station is going to have the same affect as it does over here. None of it is good anywhere.

These folk are spreading everywhere in case you have not already noticed south america in particular]…given half a chance they will establish a church right next door to the catholic church , that may have been there for 500 years. It’s called church planting ! I have met some of these evangelicals here in south africa and they often have a preconceived idea/notion that catholics need to be ‘witnessed’ to about the truth…that is the truth according to their belief…usually evangelical protestant [bible alone…ect.ect.]. Young people sometime find themselves attracted to these churches because the service is very upbeat in the form the worship takes. I think every catholic church the world over should appoint a youth leader and that person must be tasked with looking out for the youth…i.e. finding fun activities for them to participate in…this has worked very well in our church. These young ‘energy packets’ have often helped out with street collections ect…in other words include them and they will stay ! 🙂

I heard that church attendance in general is in decline all over the EU ???! I suspect this will only change once people start to realise that crass materialism will never satisfy mankinds thirst ! With all the immigration to the EU and here in Africa , it may become necessary for the catholic church to become more of an evangelising church [focus] than a teaching church ??? One thing that i have noticed is that the Irish folk in our parish are very involved and really add plenty of ‘oomph’ to our ministries !😃 🙂

Me personally no, I use to listen to SW radio in the late 70’s, picked up a few protestant preachers from the USA. and … (I’m still Catholic,) maybe not the best one in the world, but I’ll never leave the ROCK.

EWTN is coming in here loud and clear, broadcasting all over Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales and the rest of Europe.

There are loads of preachers on the Sat: mainly from the USA, I rarely ever listen to them.

Some people may be influenced, but there is a lot of apathy around, saw that first hand when the Mormons came here, people simply didn’t want to know.

I have an old chin-wag with them, but they don’t influence me one tiny bit, I think they had very few scalps here.

The parable of the seed springs to mind, if your faith is planted in fertile soil then they can preach all they like, if not you may fall victim.

Ireland is getting immigrants from the Philippines, Lithuania and Poland, and else-where, we have many different nationalities at Mass now on Sunday, and very devout people in deed, their reverence puts mine in the shade, and me to shame.

So if our own people aren’t attending, then it’s being balanced by the immigrants.

I have a sweet Baptist co-worker next to me in the office who lived in Guatemala City, Guatemala for the past 40 years until very recently.

She told me that while Guatemala is still "pretty much Catholic,’ nonetheless “the Christian Church is growing there too.”

She didn’t mean that as wicked as it sounded. But she is very uniinformed. She told me she just can’t understand WHY the Catholic Church gets so upset in Guatemala when people “leave the Catholic Church for the Christian Church.”

I bristle every time I hear her talk like that.
She’s very sweet, but sometimes I feel like yelling out,
just WHO do you think we Catholics worship???

The evangelicals really do think they have a God-ordained mission to witness the “true” gospel (theirs) to the Catholics.

Yes, and they are winning!

I wouldn’t say they are “winning.”
Most Guatemalans are, and will remain, Catholic.
And you can’t convert a well-catechised, informed Catholic to Protestantism. At least not by honest means.
Because to be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant, as one famous writer put it. All the historical evidence is on the Catholic side, all of it. Those Catholics who are leaving are thus the ones who never made any effort to understand their faith and the true history of Christianity.

The problem is the vast majority of Catholics are not well formed in the faith, whereas Evangelicals are and they consider the Catholic faith to be a false religion.

I agree with you there that poorly Catechised Catholics will fall to these preachers, ( ducks in a barrel of water ) which is why I’m glad this forum is up and running, getting out the word.

I don’t know what they’re teaching in the schools here now, but I was spoon fed the faith by the Nuns and Christian Brothers and the visits of the Dean, who kept any eye on our knowledge, and to make sure are teachers were doing their job.

Exactly, unformed Catholics will fall in large numbers to the false teachings of Protestantism.

“Religion takes a back seat in Western Europe
By Noelle Knox, USA TODAY 8/10/2005
DUBLIN, Ireland — “I don’t go to church, and I don’t know one person who does,” says Brian Kenny, 39, who is studying psychotherapy and counseling at Dublin Business School. “Fifteen years ago, I didn’t know one person who didn’t.”
Church attendance in Ireland, though still among the highest in Western Europe, has fallen from about 85% to 60% from 1975 to 2004, according to the Dublin Archdiocese.” see full story usatoday.com/news/world/2005-08-10-europe-religion-cover_x.htm

This from USA Today from 2005, it should be no suprise that Ireland is being envangilized by Protestants. Be glad it is K-Love and not a hard line anti-Catholic group. I listen to K-love and I am suprised by some of the Catholic stuff that bleeds through. K-love mainly plays praise music and doesn’t run preaching-type programing. Though I would prefer we had Catholic radio in my area, until they do, I would rather my children listen to the music it plays as opposed to the trash that comes over popular radio stations. It may be a danger, but it could be much worst.

I would suggest anyone that hasn’t read “The Next Christendom; The coming of Global Christianity” by Philip Jenkins do so. It is a survey of the decline of Christianity in the Northern Hemisphere(bad?) and the rise of the Southern church(Good?). Non-Catholic groups from the Southern Hemisphere have been sending Missionaries to the British Isles for years. And also to America. American Catholics ever wonder why we have so many third-world priest? They are a blessing. But it shows our failure in the North.

We have to learn to envagalize, starting in our own parishs, we need to figure out how we can be the ones envangalizing, instead being reactionary to what K-love does.

When I first heard their promo about their mission to Ireland I was apalled also, but now I praise God it isn’t a JW or Mormon radio station.

This is very , very common here in Africa as well…remember that evangelicals are actively encouraged to ‘witness’ to catholics whom they view as unsaved !!! One of the reasons young catholics may feel intimidated by their probing , lies in the fact that they don’t know how to respond when confronted by an evangelical…after all the evangelical will ask if the person is saved ? The churches teaching seems [to me] to be that Jesus died for our sins , yet we must ‘WORK OUT’ our own salvation…with fear and trembling. An evangelical will say that they are already saved and nothing more can/should be done in this regard…can you see how a young person could become confused !!! I wish a senior person could provide us with a suitable response which could be used to educate [with love] non-catholics/evangelicals. Perhaps our church will also become more of an evangelising church than a teaching church , whereby inviting more people to join the church will become common. In light of the growing number of christian cults lets hope and pray for a revitalised church.
