Protestant 'research' on Satanic elements in Catholicism

So much of the stuff posted on here is total nonsense. It seems to be completely in reverse.

e.g. a triangular shaped frieze in a 10th century cathedral, symbolising the Trinity will be represented as “Masonic” because 800 years later somebody put a triangular shape on the dollar bill, and 150 years later somebody else decided that this was a masonic temple.

Is there any evidence that satanists ever used a bent cross to mock Christianity? Surely the slight forwards bend of the Pope’s cross also represents the shepherd’s crook, the Pope being the chief earthly shepherd of Christ’s flock. I don’t think I ever heard this one until somebody noticed that JPII’s cross looked slightly different and spawned their own little conspiracy theory based on personal bigotry and no evidence.

Or, someone will look at the Papal crest and say that the crossed keys and crown look like a skull and crossed bones (itself a Christian symbol before the German army’s aristocratic officer corps stole it, and only later portrayed as the ‘Jolly Roger’ in pirate movies released around the time of World War I) and that the skull and crossed bones resembles a pentangle, which has only been a pagan symbol since Gerald Gardner founded Wicca in the 1930’s.

It’s just nonsense. Has anyone actually done any serious research into any of this?

Even the more serious research, such as the idea of the upside-down crucifix mainly comes from the works written by or for James VI & I, the Protestant king who introduced witch burning to England from Scotland and commissioned the King James Bible. Much of the ‘research’ was based on hearsay and anti-Catholic superstition, and much more on James’s own opinions, which were simply accepted as Truth because he was King and head of the church.

Can anybody actually provide any serious allegations?

“He that dwelleth in heaven shall laugh at them: and the Lord shall deride them.” :rotfl: Psalm 2:4

ok, someone brought this up in another thread. i honestly don’t know and have been wondering myself.
what do you make of the bent cross staff, with the distorted looking Jesus on it, that the later popes have used? what is the history on it?

some anti-Catholics claim it to be some sort of freemason or satanic symbol.
i think this may have been what this (non Catholic) person was alluding to in his post.

How ironic. i just posted a topic asking about the bent cross. 😛

Thanks DL82,

I often have to listen to this nonsense with my Pentecostal, Born-Again relatives. It is called Common Sense. Something many people lack.

Why would the freemasons use a bent cross? Freemasonry has nothing to do with Christianity. Besides, all Masonic symbols are geometrically perfect, because they believe in sacred geometry (any religion that worships maths has got to be crazy! 😉 )

As for it being a satanic cross, I don’t know where the evidence comes from. I have yet to see any. One site I looked at (from conspiracy nuts) said that it was used by satanists in the 6th century! Were there any satanists in the 6th century? Surely at that time, devil worship would more likely have been associated with the gods of paganism, I find it hard to believe that Christianity would have been well established enough to provoke the kind of backlash religion that we see in so-called ‘satanism’.

The “bent or broken cross” allegation originated from Piers Compton, a guy who also claimed that the pope had been replaced by a lookalike imposter.

There’s no end to these types of loony allegations : the pope’s hat is shaped like a fish to honor Dagon … the Egyptian obelisk in Vatican Square is a pagan phallic symbol … … the pope’s staff bears a little crucifix because Catholics think Jesus is like a little worm … it’s like the rantings of a schizophrenic.

Not all Pentecostalists / Born Again Christians subscribe to this kind of rumor-mongering. Most don’t, that I’ve encountered. We only notice the kooks because they offend us. And I can’t say there aren’t Catholic kooks, so I don’t throw stones. But yes, it is frustrating and offensive.

Much of the “satanic” connection to Catholicism got started by Alexander Hislop’s book “The Two Babylons” (1903). It’s premise was later regurgitated by evangelical Ralph Woodrow in his own book which became quite popular. Then Woodrow did some deeper digging and found out he had been hoodwinked. He took his book our of circulation and wrote a second book recanting all of his original claims. Although he did not convert to Catholicism he did refute all the nonsensical stuff he once believed was true in his book “The Babylon Connection?”

i’ve never heard that one before!
Oh, there was a whole crew that believed this on another board. This one woman kept posting picture after picture of Pope JP2 wearing the tall hat and saying, “A picture’s worth a thousand words! A picture’s worth a thousand words!” Had she asked, I could have told her that it’s a miter, like Hebrew priests wore. But she was acting like she possessed mind-blowing proof, like a photograph of a gunman on the grassy knoll shooting JFK.

Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you (falsely) because of me.

Mathew 5:11

'nuff said ?

there was a horror movie called Dagon. i believe it was on the Sci Fi channel not too long ago. the people that worshipped Dagon started to turn into a mutation of fish and man. like monsters. if the pope worships Dagon us Catholics might start mutating.

Dagon was the Philistine fish-god. See eg. Judges 16:23, 1 Samuel 5:2-8.

The movie you saw was based on H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Shadow over Innsmouth,” although it took the title from his shorter story, “Dagon.” It was okay — they have yet to make a really good movie of Lovcraft’s work.

i had rented that movie before and when it came on cable i couldn’t watch it again.
the end was way too twisted for me. with the torture and all. yeeesh…

This woman, … did she have the name of a small bird?? if so, I know where you were 😉
It was on a board called (Edited by Moderator). The member’s screen name was (Edited by Moderator) She loved to post pictures that she felt proved Catholic leadership misconduct (popes praying in front of statues, etc).

Yep.

Lovecraft’s work rarely included much gore. I think Hollywood feels compelled to pile gore into horror movies because it’s easier than making a truly frightening movie. It’s hard to be scary, but it’s easy to be gross. Most truly great horror movies contain very little gore.

Good Lord!! … that means there are now two of them 😉 thanks Gamera.

Knowing a philistine fish god has never existed, their claims bite the dust.
